Hey Im workin on a 1940 chevy business coupe. The owner was gonna put in a fuel cell so the original tank was thrown away. Now that I have the car I convinced him to go with a stock tank. My question is, Is a business coupe and a 3 p***enger coupe the same thing? They only list tanks for non 3 p***enger coupe and sedan deliveries. And I would ***ume the sedan deliveries and business coupes had the same tank because of no back seat. If this is the case does anyone know where to find a reproduction tank for a business coupe because the only one that they show that I think will work is a 750 dollar SS tank and I don't think the customer will go for that compared to 250 for a steel stamped tank. So anyway thank you in advance for any help/input. Joey

well Im not too super concerned about spendin 250, I wanna run it in the stock placement, not in the trunk, I have heard the mustang tank before was a good idea but not for this particular job, but thanks anyway i appreciate it.

I've seen '40 Chevy coupes with the filler neck on the side and the tank mounts inside the car. Other '40 Chevy coupes have a filler neck in the fender and it looks like the tank mounts under the car. Which one is a business coupe? What mustang tank is used for which style?

The business coupe has no back seat just a raised plywood floor. So the tank is behind the front seat under neath the rear ply wood floor and the gas neck exits the RH/p***enger side quarter infront of the rear fender. Normally with the mustang tanks people sink them into the trunk floor and just fill inside the trunk, but in PA the fill has to exit the body. Im sure some one would put a sticker on it but I would rather just make it right since Its a resto job. Not a car thats already finished. Although If I absolutely had to Im sure I could go with the mustang then put the fill in another exterior location because I am puttin in a flush mount gas door anyway

I think the business coupe filler is in the side of the car, in front of the rear fender, whereas the coupe's filler is in the rear fender. That may mean a difference in the location of the filler on the tank.

Bob Drake just started carrying 40s Chevy tanks for $170. I know they have them for the 48, maybe the 40, too.

I've used Mustang tanks before. They essentially just replace the floor in your trunk... but they may not work in a car that narrow. Brand new Mustang tanks are around $100.

Ok Ill check out bob drake, Yea the mustang tank is used for rotted trunks and like you said bigger cars. This trunk floor is nice, has a lot of contours and a narrow frame.

I've got a 40 master delux coupe-had it for 40+ years. Original tank is in the inside under the plywood with fill on the right side front of the fender. Truthfully, I hate it.
Gas smells, plus the danger of a split in a wreck. I'm eventually going to a under trunk floor tank and will have to figure out a way to use the original fill location-no mean feat. FYI-its a full street rod, not an original. I think the sedans used the fender fill on the right side.

Thanks for all the help but every site seems to not carry/ make the business coupe tank. Maybe Ill check into a regular coupe tank and as long as the body is close enough maybe I can mount it in the coupe position and run the neck through the fender instead.

Probably because most people don't want to have the tank sitting next to them inside the car anymore.

My '37 has the tank behind the front seat.
I used a sedan frame and had to remove the straps and mounts for the frame tank becasue of the trunk floor being so low for the spare tire under the plywood trunk floor.
That would make a frame tank real low (Well I guess you could jack it up to get some rake, and get some room).
The '40 may be the same.
We may be stuck with the business coupes.

I hear the danger aspect but not these days theres hardly any old car accidents that are that bad. not that it couldnt happen. And I did a 53 chevy pick up for customer and just replaced the tank behind the seat and I dont think he has any fume issues. As long as everything is sealed with fresh rubber, gaskets, ect, shouldnt be any problems.

Ok thanks yea I guess I'll either be lookin for a used one or will have to go to an aftermarket different style and location, thanks for the info though. Im like to only order things once I hate tryin to send stuff back and go around in circles so Im tryin all my options first for info before I make any decisions. Thanks again to all for your input. A friend did just that with his 40 Coupe. Worked out well using this tank and frame work. He put a gas door in the fender but he did have to do a little floor pan work in the trunk.

  16. If you are going to mount a stock sedan tank under the trunk floor consider running the fill neck up through the driver's fender. Makes it a lot easier at gas stations. Just some advise from a 31 year '40 Chevy owner.

On the other hand I had a '48 sedan delivery for a few years and never had any gas smell from the in car tank. Just needs to be properly vented. I have a '42-'48 sedan delivery tank in very nice condition - cheap - if your interested PM me. Wouldn't be surprised if it's essentially the same as the earlier tank.
