40 chevy rearend

    being a ford man , im need help on a 40 chevy , what year (s)rear end assy. will interchange

    pretty sure it's all by itself. The old chevy parts book shows the center section/torque tube fits one year only.

    geared to low . !!!!!!!!!!!!! , this is not my car , tops out at about 5o mph ?????????? engine runs perfect , lots of low end , just not a highway crusier ???

    50 MPH is about the limit for the old stock Chevies. You need to remember that back in the day the roads weren't all that great and the suspension and brakes were not made for much better either.

    You need to decide whether to stay with what you have or drop in a modern driveline. On my '40 I went with a new 350 crate motor and 700R4 then swapped in a 2001 Explored 8.8 rear end. I put in a front suspension assembly from Jim Meyer Racing with big disk brakes and rack and pinion steering. Not a big job and it will cruise anywhere in comfort.

    I believe the 3:55 gears from a '50-54 powerglide car can be used in the '40 rearend. The pinion splines are the same from '40-54.

    This is your only possible option other than changing over to an open driveline.
