that would be a killer idea if I could afford one..... lol I want the short (not much longer than the tires) bed, and I think the 40 fenders are a good foot longer each way

Im not completely opposed to starting over on the bed, just depends on what it looks like when its dropped into a better spot (I didn't have a flat table to build it on so I built it on the truck)

:D got one I can borrow for a while???

How much *** would it look like to do a rounded edge trailer fender mounted off the rear caliper brackets so it floated with the rear? I'm thinking it would be VERY difficult to make look decent, let alone good. What kind of spacing would there have to be between the inside edge and the bedside to acount for articulation, i think that alone would kill any chance of making that idea work, that and the flat top of the fender.... sorry thinking in type

any chevy stepside bed from 1940 till about 1987. pull off the fenders and cut it down to the size you want.

Nope I hardly have a "pot to piss in" as they say... which I dont really get anyway, because if you were in wanting of a pot and then finally got one... why go and piss in it.

    old people are weird.

But seriously. a Bed. just find a ****ty bed and start cutting and molding. no better time then the present to **** up and learn from it. I am pro at that!

I reallize the sides are the simple part, the fenders themselves would be the problem......... hmmm

flat trailer fenders with a rounded outer edge would be the simplest thing to do, but then would have to be mounted stupid high off the tire or mounted motorcycle style to the caliper bracket and the bed be alot narrower leaving a big gap between the fender and the bedside for articulation.

how much of the wheel does the states law say must be covered? if its just the back for water spray you could hug a fender real tight and stop it pretty high up on the wheel.

Not to dis any of those that already have em but much like a Plum Crazy Mopar, another truck cab rod is the last thing we need. That said let's have a look...

You want it to be all yours and it's what you have to work with, good for you and kool to come on here and talk about it. I too think it needs a front of some kind. I think a tilt forward hood/grille combo. You can still have your hidden radiator gig that way. Think along the lines of a "deco" car or truck from the late 30s/early 40s. You can fab up something that will add balance to the required fenders. There might be few old dump or stake trucks to get the pieces from and they're usually different than pickups so cutting one up won't be a loss to the resto world that pines away for parts. The bed, that's all you dude. Sounds like you have a plan and it just might work.

I can´t think of any dragster that looks like this. And even more so, when you get done mounting the fenders and - presumably - headlights. I´d really, really think again about what sort of look you are going for. My 2c.

If I didnt have to put fenders on it I wouldnt, would be alot easier to accomplish what I want, but the laws require them here.

Highlander, I do not want to put a hood on it, although I have seen some done that way its not for me on this project, maybe a future one, maybe a future rebuild of this one.

So back to my question of the suspension, tie rod end from a 70 duster used as the mounting for the hairpin to the frame, using the adjuster welded to the hairpin. Would this be strong enough? Rear suspension suggestions?

Ill tell ya from experience....get used to the critisism. Bobber trucks are a touchy subject with these guys on this board. A lot of them think we should only be building model A's and Duece's to be worthy.

Im with a few of the other guys. That bed has to go. Wide tires are hard to pull off on bobber trucks too. Throws the proportions way off. Let alone the fact that you need fenders. Consider something narrower, then down the road with some cash you could do some Hurst cheaters.

Chop Chop Chop, 39-46 cabs are tall! on the bottom and the top. It'll definetely change the whole look of that truck with at least 4-5in out of the lid. Then that leaves you with the front end. I pushed mine out a ways (farther than i like it now) because of my unique front suspension. Bobber trucks start to look out of proportion with the front end out so far. Notice the trucks that seem to get Magazine attention. Alot of them aren't suicide. All i gotta say is its all about proportions.

My 2c, Good luck and have fun.

I know all about the critisism, i expect it to a point, just trying to cut through some of that and get to a couple things that I plan to change. Its going to get a 4in chop, the body is dropped over the frame 3-4 inches. I dont have a good side shot to really show proportions at this time. The truck is in storage at my in-laws.

Old side shot quickly photochopped into an idea for some fixin?

Yes it will have doors, its just braced now where the cab was channeled over the frame.

To make the most out of this style of build regardless of preference for it, How and what way should the proportions move? Its close, but still not there in that pic.

That doesn´t look bad as it is - I thought the front was a lot more strecthed out from what I could see. I think I´d lengthen the bed and push the back axle further back.

James, thats a bit of photochopping, its a bit further forward right now, I pulled it back to the point that it made the front look more "solid"
