Hi I just purchased a banjo rearend off of a guy with a 40 coupe. I am getting ready to go through the brakes and freshen them up and as I went to pull the hubs I realized one side does not have a castle nut, washer and cotter pin on it! It has something I have never seen. This is my first experience with a banjo but what is this thing? Anybody know what it is what it does? Its like the axle on that side doesnt have threads? I have been searching on here for the past four hours and can't find anything. So I have decided that this warrants a question (post). Hope not a stupid one at that, but let me know if it is or if you know what your looking at or if it will make for any issues on pulling the hub to get to the brakes. Actually, it would because the hub isn't big enough to go over it! The only thought I'm having is that maybe this and the axle comes out with the hub when I pull it? I put a couple pictures of it up. One w/ a flash and one without and another picture of the other side which seems normal. Wow I want to go get a puller early in the mornin but not sure now! Anybody that could help I would appreciate it! thanks alot if it wasn't for the h.a.m.b. and all the h.a.m.b.sters I would be screwed!

Is that a nail holding the ring on?? Grind 'er up, pry it off!

  3. That right there is a mess...

Looks like someone screwed up the threads and then welded something on there to hold the hub on.

    Anyone else?

Yes, a small problem was magnified for whatever reason, probably emergency situation. Get it apart and try doctoring it up or last result another axle.

Yes, that is definitely a mess.

Get the grinder out and grind off that weld blob on the end. You'll most likely need to cut some new threads, or get a new inner axle for that side.

The other end of the axle has a gear attached to it, so there's no way you're going to get that axle out of the tube with out grinding that "thing" off first.

Ahhhh.. The power of the HAMB! That didn't take near as long to figure out as it will to fix! I'd start looking for another axle. Looks like the fix worked for alooooooooong time though!

Looks like you can still see the end of the axle beside that piece of weld. If you grind off just the weld, that homemade sleeve may come loose and avoid further damage to the axle. If the threads are too far gone to chase, you can probably find someone who can build it up, turn it down and cut new threads...

There is a special tool, and there are a number of improv methods for rethreading Ford axles from behind the tip...IF you find a usable axle in there after killing that lump, the threads can be handled.

before grinding it off it seems like theres enough room between that and the drum to do your hub puller. do that first. then push the hub on lightly and grind that flush with the axle. take it apart and clean it up with a wire wheel. put some weld on that entire area all the way around where the threads should be. chuck it up in a lathe and turn it down to the proper size for the threads. fill any pits and then turn it down again and emery cloth it. now take a die and put new threads on. botta bing*

If the weild is not up to the drum say about 1/4 inch and nothing to stop it.I have used a pinion puller with good results, once its free cut off the weild.
