Porter Mufflers have been around since 1931 They sound geat on a flathead.
I have a youtube clip of one on my website www.portermufflers.com

  7. Used to have a homemade set for my old flathead built by my uncle from exhaust pipe steel wool and an old torque tube. Drill holes in the exhaust pipet surround it with the tubestuff it with steel wool and weld it up. Sound's like music.

Have Brockman MellowTones steel-packs on my Merc flathead, but might just try Porters on my Model A Tudor build.

I'll be using Porters when the time comes!

  12. Please correct your post. Smithy's are NOT made in China, never have been. We make them in Rancho Dominguez, California and have for the last 40+ years.
Know what you are talking about before you slam a product!

  13. My Smithy's have been USA made - did something change?

  14. I put Smitty's on my stock 8BA and it's quieter than a mouse pissing on cotton. If you've upped your compression or blocked off the heat risers it would be louder. I've been somewhat intrigued by Porter's by their sound clips, and might give them a try at some point.

  15. Porters. Best kept secret in the exhaust business...

  16. Which ones did you use? I'm guessing it was some of the long ones becasue each time I have fitted the short ones, they have a real nice rumble to them (there are three different lengths)

Never heard of Porters until today, they were the best kept secret! Anyway, I use Smithy's very happy. But I usually paint them silver (aluminum).

Another alternative, buy some stock type can mufflers from Macs or elsewhere for another vintage type look.

  18. I got whichever ones come with the Red's Headers full dual package. I believe they're 22". It does have a decent note to it for sure, but just not as rumbly as I thought it would be. Can't even hear it at idle.

For flatheads I like the loud sound of 12" long resonators in place of mufflers.

I had Smithys (the shortest ones available) on my '39 Standard with a stock 283. At idle you couldnt even hear it run. A few times I had to put my had on the hood to make sure it hadnt stalled. I ended up uncorking it all the time just to make a little noise.

:Dhave smithys on my warmed 8ba, cant hear them in front or in the cab at idle, but they sound great at the back and when taking off, either rolling out or on it.
but i also dont like the look at me sound, more of the sleeper look and sound.
