I have a friend who has a NOS 40 std grill-never installed-mint. He does not do internet etc. He may want to sell it. I have one as well so I don't need it. I see Drake repops for $1100-1300 now and then. I told him at least what a repop is but possibly more-any guess? Another fellow called and has a complete 40 roller ch***is-engine trans radiator wheels etc etc-just wants the body-flathead looks decent in pics and turns over-clean frame numbers etc-value? The 40's we built are usually just rollers and I use the frame etc.
Just trying to help them out--Thank you

I bought a Drake repop awhile back when they were available and I was on a list to notify after Drake announced the 40 Standard grille would be made in a limited quan***y.
The price was $1250,I don’t know if they’re “out of stock” or “back ordered” or still available.

My friend always said "it is worth what the cheque is written for". It is also what the owner thinks is fair and comfortable in accepting for the part vs going all out for whatever they may get. Bob Drake lists the available chrome grille for $1849 and the painted grille for $1649 that is out of stock. Could ask $500 over the Drake prices and may get it with someone needing a grille to finish off a complete original car and has deep pockets. I have been buying parts just as they are about to dry up and cringe at the costs. It would be cheaper to buy a quality car than work to fix one up at current prices. I have all the pieces specific to a convertible now except the rear window which is out of production. I am not doing a concours restoration so a window of similar size and appropriate appearance may be the solution. I think repo parts will eventually disappear as the market for them moves on.

Is it chrome, or painted? Also, how does the seller plan to advertise it? The price is a lot higher on eBay where the entire world has a shot at it, than it would be at a swap meet or in the back of some Ford club newsletter. The value goes up by at least 50% if you're willing to put it on the internet with proper pictures and description and willing to ship it to whoever wants it. The seller will also have to pay a hefty percentage of the sale (around 15%) if it's sold that way, but should come out ahead.

The value of two identical items is vastly different depending on the amount of effort the seller is willing to put into selling it.

If I was selling it, I would ask the Drake equivalent price +$500 premium (like Patterg2003 said, I agree) and I'd have it on eBay available to the world, I think someone would pay it, especially because it's NOS and the Drake ones are not currently available, so someone in a hurry will pony up the premium.

If the seller expects the buyer to pick it up from him in person and doesn't want to pay the selling fees, knock about $800 off of that same price.

Regarding the ch***is, is he selling the ***le with it as well? That would make a difference. A few years ago I picked up a 35 car frame with legible numbers, the seller used an aftermarket frame under his body.
After speaking with the DMV it would still get a new number ***igned to it ( obviously) and the lady told me the legible numbers were only good to verify it was not stolen.

A few years ago we did a 40 std coupe--checked and was clear with dmv-had not been registered for years. Had a bill of sale only. Went to CHP for verification-they cleared it and we got the ***le from DMV-no issues.
FYI--the grill is NOS Ford-not drake- bare sides, chrome center-I have one too but hanging onto mine for now

I just ***umed the guy with the frame, would use the ***le to register his body on the new frame. If so, the numbers on the original are a duplicate and can’t be used for another vehicle

I think it's funny how we get some guys saying the old car hobby is dying, and then we see the truth when a fella can get a real nice price for a 40 Ford grille. I'm no chicken little, and am glad that 40 Fords are holding their value.

NOS 1940 stuff has to be close to what they are asking for those nice 1932 grilles. As far as complete factory type built frames for sale - not sure but there seems to be those cast off's for a lot of early years - as guys up grade to the later built frames - so not sure of the demand. I get a lot of good Studebaker stock from those guys upgrading and it makes me able to keep rolling on great stuff.
