I'm doing a quickchange in my '40 coupe, I've got the model A crossmember and rear spring. The question is, where does a person locate the A crossmember? At the top of the frame rails, middle or bottom. I would like it to set at about the stock heigth. I've searched and all the photos of this particular installation arent real clear as to just how high the A crossmember is located. Thanks in advance. Toolroomer
I'm looking at doing the same in my 40 sedan. I have assumed that the A cross member will go in the chassis rails as per stock setup, and any height adjustment would be done with spring mods, i.e reverse eye, re arch or spring leaf removal. I'm pretty sure it will be too high with a stock spring, tho the extra weight of the 40 may have a large effect. Any input from people that know would be good.
A pal of mine managed to stretch a stock "A" spring under a stock '40 coupe back in '56/7. It was called "Tiny Tilt" as the rear bumper was about 3' off the ground. I know he didn't use the a-bone crossmember and he put the stock spring back in after a couple weeks as it was ill handling. I'm not sure but a guy might have to go thru the trunk floor for the hump in an A rear crossmember.
Yes, the A crossmember is about 2 1/2 inches narrower and it will need the trunk floor modified. This is not a problem since mine needs a new trunk floor. Thanks for the replies, if anyone has any more information, don't be bashful. Toolroomer
