In my 37 truck I have a 40 rear end with a 39 box. The problem I have is that the oil keeps running out of the diff down the torque tube and filling the gearbox. (The truck is lowered and the diff is higher than the box) Has any one ever fitted a seal to stop this? If so what seal do you use? Thanks Pete
Have you considered measuring the shaft and the tube and asking the bearing store if a seal that size is available?
[ QUOTE ] there is a seal inside the torque tube. maybe your's is worn out? [/ QUOTE ]None of my parts books or my 36 years of experience shows a seal. Where is the seal in yours and why would your axle have one anyway?
are you kidding me? there is a bearing and a SEAL on the front of the torque tube on the inside...take a look,it's there. no one ever replaces them....greg

you are indicating part 4245-the green bible names that part---RETAINER, DRIVE SHAFT BEARING. It is a stop--something to keep the bearing from moving down the shaft.
Have you ever looked at that part? Its STEEL, not a rubber seal. PFF needs a seal at the rear of the torque tube, so he doesnt have to fill the tube with 600w.
here is from little dearborn's catalog again. i'm not gonna start an arguement here...i just wanted to help him with his rear end problem...there is a seal at the front...if it is not a seal, why does it have the same part number as the inner rear axle seal? i guess we have a difference of opinions here....i'll go on replacing the front seal, you can go on calling it a retainer
When I totally rebuilt my "A" rear, I ordered and received a proper "seal" for the same spot as the V8 unit. Don't know if the dimensions are the same in this area but you might want to investigate the possibility. Hope this helps! Regards, Dave.
I went out and looked in some torque tubes and I was WRONG! It is a proper rubber seal in both places. I apologize 36threewindow
Someone, I think it's Tardel, makes a funky looking swedged tube thing that fits into the back of the torquetube to keep the oil from running forward too much on lowered cars. Call Tardel and see if he has it. If it's not him he may know who has it. alchemy
Didn't AV8 publish plans for a Tardel designed baffle to go in the torque tube just for this? I think it was in American Rodder mebbe 3 years ago--my copy is lost in a mound of stuff waiting for xeroxing, but surely someone here has a cite.
Thanks for the input, manyoldcars hit the nail on the head. I need a seal to go at the rear of the tube, to stop the oil running down it. I know I could measure the inner and outer, but at the moment I dont want to pull the rear end. I was hopping some one else had come across this problem before and maybe could tell me what fitted Thanks Pete
Awww, the plight of the lowered closed-driveline. As already discussed, there is a mid-length bearing in the torque-tube and a seal at the foward end, but these are rarely maintained and would not completely fix the problem in the lowered car. Tardel's 'thingee' is no longer available, but what it did was dam up the oil at the back to allow the oil to drain back thru the hole in the housing. You could probably make something yourself, it just has to fit oil-tight to the inside of the tube and have an ID with enough clearance to p*** the driveshaft. Or do what Ford guys have done since the dawn of dropped axles- wrap a baby-diaper around your universal cover, and every couple of weeks pull the side plug on your trans, let the excess dribble out, and put it back in your rearend.
