My 29 A has a 40 ford box, it was built in 1957 been good all this time, it's mounted below the frame, out the side, with pitman arm pointing Up for traditional drag link not cross steer.
I don't see this as possible to not have bump steer with two drastically different arcs.... The only way that it could be correct geometry is if the tie rod in the draglink is in the same location above the wishbone mount like the old mustang / 4 bar kits in the 70s I mounted a box like that once ... It had bump steer , not noticeable " change lanes" bump steer ... But it was there
Here is a not so great photo of the last one I did. Clearly, it's not a Model A, but it's the only picture I could find. I don't take a lot of pictures. You can at least see the 3/8" plate welded into the frame. Note that part of it sticks up above the rail for the top mounting hole. I don't want to get into another argument about bumpsteer on here( been there), but thirytwo is right.. Pitman arm pointing up= bumpsteer. That is a geometric fact. If you want to use the '40 box, do yourself a big favor and put it in as Ford did ,or reverse the box to get the pitman arm pointed the right way if you do it the sidesteer way .
i run a 40s ford cross steer box as side steer, i took a rhd and lhd box, swapped the guts over in each and you end up with two side steer boxes with the pitman arm sticking down.
Looking to use a 40 box and mount it through my model a frame for side steer. I know a couple of you guys have placed it under the frame but I am using front wishbones and will be in the way. Any one have photos of them with a side steer fabrication that I can replicate? Would love to go through the frame. Thinking about mounting the box upside down and fabing a plate. More pics the better. I have a SBC in there now.
