I searched the forum with no luck... Ive got a repop 40 ford steering wheel on the way for my roadster. I made my own colum, but now I need to machine my steering shaft to fit the wheel. Can anyone give me the dimensions of the tapered end of a 40 ford steering shaft, including the key way slot. This would help me out a ton! Thank you!
"if I can find it" I will try today, and put up pic/info tonite...if ... It was a cut off piece, so not easy to spot in my pile.
Go to any good marine shop and purchase the steering shaft from them. The boat shafts have the 7 degree taper and 5/8 spline same as the 40 Ford. They are solid so u can't use the horn wire through the center. The cost is about $35 on the West Coast. The original shaft is .760 OD. Hope this helps. Here are a few photos of my conversion and the complete kit is available from Weedetr.
Confused on repro parts. Is your repro wheel chevy splined or early ford taper with key? Sure sounds like you want Ford? Here is a piece of rusty 40 car shaft. Pics are huge, and tapers are not sized by what dia the start and ends of the taper, but I measured as best as possible. I used a Starret angle finder that shows 2.5 degrees. That sounded off, so i set it to 3 as well as 3.5, and it looked wrong? And I think the taper would be: 2.5 X 2 = 5, so "5 degree taper"? Threaded part is .500 long, that's not on the sketch. Tool is kinda what they cut those part-circular keyways with.
FandJ thank you for taking the time to get those dimensions! Skid marks I will pm you to see what you've got. What I've got is one of those generic DD shafts from mr roadster. I planed on machining the taper and keyway on one end to fit the repro 40 ford wheel. Never mind the super long shaft I haven't cut anything to fit yet.
