One of me fellow teacher's Dad's has an all origional '40 Ford 2dr sedan that has been sitting on a barn since '57. Body is good, but has surface rust. It's a North Dakota car, so the rest of the rust is probably minimal. Interior is probably shot. What's it worth, aproximatly? Rare? Is it worth restoring? His Mom is probably going to scrap it if he doesn't do anything with it. Thanks for the info. -Jeff
I remember seeing a pic quite awhile ago of a '40 Ford coupe sitting on a trailer at a swap meet half-disassembled and totally covered in surface rust, and it said it sold for $6k.
I like those sedans myself. There is a '40 tudor sedan down the street from Killer in Hesperia, CA. If I remember right it had a stuck SBF with a C4 swapped in. It's complete and pretty straight, just surface rust. I think it had been sitting for a long time too. I think he said he was thinking in the neighborhood of $7K.
original?? My guess would be around 4000-8000. Depending on if the flatty is runnable and the general condition. Just a guess mind you/
Now dont get me wrong, I like these cars and I have one myself BUT... I`ve seen these sedans going CHEAP!I`ve seen sedan projects on ebay lately that arent even selling because people just arent bidding! If you really want one I know where a decent project is for around 3000.00...I think....maybe cheaper. Dont get a bunch of money wrapped up in this car if you just plan on selling it...you may be sorry. Coupes are what everyone wants (including me) but if you get a sedan you`ve got everything but the coupe shell, THEN you`ve got some bucks!
I looked at one that only had surface rust, untill I got to the drip rails... they rust out from the inside! I passed at $250... but that was a few years ago, and it was missing the hood too. Now I've got the hood... Oh well... He might just consider it a "nice old car" and if his mom thinks it's scrap metal you might ask him what HE thinks it's worth, If he hasn't got a clue offer him waht any old transportation car is worth, a grand. and horse trade from there. If he's thinking it's worth $500 and you offer $5000 he might get the impression it could be worth MUCH more than either figure and balk at selling it. If he knows anything about buying and selling he'll ask more than you're offer and expect you to offer less than his. That's actually accepted common courtesy in price haggling.
jeff I bought my 40 4 door for 1000. in 1998, sold the motor for 1200, I'd say its worth whatever you got in your pocket at the moment... buy it.... or give it to me... either will be acceptable cheers sawzall
