As I said, I’m shoehorning a 392 In my coupe. In my 32 I upgraded the steering with an F1 box. I’m thinking about going to the more stout F100 box for the added weight of the Hemi. Can’t find any examples of this being done here on the hamb. Does that imply that the 40 box is adequate? Or my search engine sucks? I know the 40 is cross steer, while the F100 a side drag link. Shouldn’t be a difficult swap. Unless I’m missing something. All input appreciated and probably ignored.

Not enough room between the wider frame and the inside of the tire to fit a side steer box and the accompanying drag link. Personally I’d use a 525 GM box.

  7. I don't think so B-B. You know me, I never tell anyone not to do things they seem destoned to do even if I disagree. Change just for the sake of Change is pointless in my book. There is Zero improvement between the 2 boxes. Adding and 1-1/2" hole in the side of a frame right at the torque point is not for me, then add in there is an inner frame rail that needs to be carved out. For what gain? Factory manifolds aren't for me so I can't comment on what one might clear. If you're going to build a Hot Rod let it breath. Build some Headers that fir the space left behind after you place the motor where it fits best.

Yes, it gets tight but the best thing in life are tight, right? And yes, it will run a manual fan when done. Electric fans are for people that can't plan ahead and read a tape measure.

That is a rebuilt stock 40 steering gear. If there was a better one for this build it would be in it. I'm building a Hot Rod, not a Street Rod. Notice the labels on the box tape.

Hiding inside the box was all the stuff to build the recommended Headers. Again, I never tell anyone to do something I wouldn't or haven't done myself that I know works best.

  8. In fact, if I built it and it didn't work as planned and I changed it I would say so.

    Thanks
Thanks Mr. Broke. I’m a newbie when I comes to the 40. I’m fluent in Model A and Model B Hot Rods. So I’m carrying those tricks of the trade with me. I need to do research, and to start asking questions. Thankfull I know who to ask.

  10. I agree in that the F-100 box is a big improvement the Model A unit. When doing my last Model A I had both the F-100 and a nice 40 unit on hand. I chose the 40 unit just due to the way it worked with the exhaust ports on the Flathead. Placing the steering box more forward made things easier for exhaust. With either box it would have steered just about the same.

The internal design of the stock 40 and F-1’s and F-100’s are very similar. Some of the sizes are slightly different, and the direction it faces, but the strength and utility of them is the same.

I'm using the stock steering box in my '40 with a heavy Cadillac installed, works well. Not power steering, but the only time I notice it's not is when the car isn't moving...

Yup, Me too my 40 has a 331 cad and a stock steering box and it steers great. I think the bias ply tires help too....
