40 wheel onto a 31 ford column

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by tub in da dirt, Aug 25, 2013.

  1. I know the tapers are different, but will a 40 wheel clear the advance and throttle arms on a stock model A column.
Has anyone done this recently ?
    Thanks

I believe the taper is the same in degrees, it's the diameter that is different. The 40 wheel, if I remember correctly, won't go on the A shaft far enough to get the nut on.

  3. I initially played around with that exact setup - 40 standard wheel on an A column. After I turned the shaft down 0.04" I was able to get the wheel on...I'm pretty sure it cleared the levers just fine. If it doesn't, you could always trim the bottom of the mast a little to give you some extra room - but you might need to tweak the advance rod a little. Another option that would give you some more room is to use a 1928-Feb 1930 column mast - they're 1" shorter (37 1/2" overall length) than the later ones (like yours).

  4. FWIW, Model A taper dimensions (1930-31): Minor diameter - 0.72" Major diameter - 0.79" Length - 0.90"

    32-48 (passenger) taper dimensions: Minor diameter - 0.68" Major diameter - 0.75" Length - 0.90"
