Finally made to time to work on the Willys again...

Here are some before and after pics of the block.
Have about 2 hours of sanding with a die grinder on it right now. Looking to take all the casting ridges out of the block, heads, and front cover.

Got a little more done last couple of days. Heads are done just need to go over them with a real small bit and clean area around "10" casting.

Here is the engine with 2 coats of Epoxy Primer. Going to smooth up the transmission case and Primer that then, finish assembly and see how this old dog runs!

    Looks impressive, well done.
Just a small tip. If you go wet on wet on top of the epoxy with your topcoat you will save yourself a lot of rekeying.

Not yet. Engine is done, just going to teardown the trans, prime it. And put both in the car. Will post pics of trans during teardown and paint. Hopefully this weekend.

Here are some pics of the trans when I started the tear-down. I already got it apart, inspected and mostly back together with new seals.
I just need the tools to adjust the front and rear bands.
Going to smooth the case tomorrow, then Prime!!!
Will post pics of that also.

  21. NOBODY finds a Willys Gasser in a Barn!!!!! It's always an old Rambler,Buick,Plymouth or something.....You lucky bastard! How about some more info on how you ended up with it. Did your dad tell you about it,did it belong to someone else who left it to you? I think I would faint if I found an old Willys, let alone,an old Gasser AND it was my dads! That's just such a great story. Did he have any pic's of what it looked like before?

  23. Do you know just how lucky you are ? What a great car to start with and being your dad's is all the better. Tell us about your dad's racing days with it, the history would be cool.

Bad Bob: I am asking my mom to dig up any pics of my dad with the willys, so far all we can find is him with his 3 different Bel-Air's.

swade41: My dad really wont tell me much. I am just trying to figure out why he parked this car in the barn and sold all the rest...THANK GOD HE DID!!!

I didnt get to put the engine and trans in the car this weekend... weather in the Texas Hill Country was not very good. Hopefully this weekend will be better.

I got the Engine and Transmission in the frame on Sunday! Fired it up last night, and ran it for sometime. Runs pretty good, carb needs a rebuild... but I will be switching it out for the Hilborn Injection anyways!!!!!!

A few months ago I had what I consider a close call.
A few miles from my house down a steep bank in a creek I saw the bottom of an old car. It had an X member that very much looked 40ish willys threw the trees and shit at 80 yards.
Turned out to be a 40 Pontiac coupe on its lid …. Maybe next time....so keep your eyes peeled ;)
    BTW
I can remember in the late 70’s ex "drag car" willys coupes for sale in the paper for 1000 to 1200 bucks “no motor or trans” :( I hope there all stashed in barns.

Great story and build. Keep it coming. I had an all steel ex-B/G 41 Willys coupe I let get away years ago. Regretted it as soon as it left the driveway.
