I just went back and read the article. Just goes to show you that just about anything can be accomplished with enough time, money, and know-how, but I wouldn't do it.

Guys were running 4 X 4's in outlaw sprint cars in the 60's.

It's ironic that this thread has come up again because I just bought a copy of CARS The automotive magazine from Sept. '61 that has an article on how to build 467 cubic inches from a 283.

My eyes go wonky today when I read 467 cubic inches from a 283, I can't imagine the response from people in 1961.

@DDDenny In a day in age where .060 is the max. overbore most SBC's go .125 is hard to imagine much less 4.312.

May not be entirely HAMB TRAD but I'm happy with 427 cubes!

I'm all for big cubic inches, but one of the endearing qualities of the smaller V8 engines is the ability to rev. I'm sure with the big stroke, they lose a lot of that.

Does anyone remember a really old article about building a big-inch small block, that involved torching out the bores and replacing them?

@gimpyshotrods Did you read the link in my post above? It involves boring the cylinders completely out and replacing them with new sleeves. As far as an article where they "torch" out the bores and replace them with new sleeves that would be interesting too read. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/467-cubic-inches-from-a-283.1257938/

I remember that one, but I seem to remember one with siamesed sleeves.

It was way back in the 70's, and the magazine was older than that.

The torching part of the one I remember was to remove as much material as possible before starting machining.

This had to be a magazine in my Uncle's collection. I probably read it in 1975-76.

Fairly old thread, but likely interest too some !
400,sbc,nick named MIGHTY MOUSE, came out in 1970 n made for the next 10 years,,can still be found fairly EZ=very low $ way to have 400 in. engine in a small package! VS, blowing stupid $$$$ on trying to make one the hard way.
The stock SBC 400,can be hopped up too super strong runner with a few tricks,if your going to race one.
The main bearing of 400 were made bigger then SBC 350,that makes a oil temp prob in the mains at higher RPM that is needed for big jumps in HP. In the mid 70s,spacer main bearing were made to put in the SBC 400=so a steel 350 crank could be used in the 400 block, making a 383. That spacer main bearing set, also makes it pos to run higher RPM then stock 400 size mains<but you do need a oil cooler to hold oil temps under 300* as the spacer mains don't transfer heat as well as thinner bearing shells=keep oil below 300*.
A after market steel 400 stroke with 350 size mains, have been after market for some time now. The rods do need shorter rod bolt design> so rod bolt heads do not hit cam lobe/thats why stock 400 SBC rods is made with short bolts.
I play n raced with a number of combo's using SBC 400 blocks,my fav. was a combo that =348in. an blow away alot of high$ sbc 350s

I concur. I have a very mild 400 SBC in my off topic daily driver C10. Hurls me and the truck effortlessly down the road.
