Building block huggers headers for the 409, modified Summit small block headers, cheap ! The tubes are a little bit small but I think it will work OK.
should work just fine. there's no reason to twist that thing up to 8 grand or anything. it'll make all the HP & torque most folks have the balls for at half that rpm that those headers were designed for. i'm guessing that they were designed for 7/8 the cu. in. and 6-8K rpm.
Go with the single. It will run better at very low RPM's, where you may find its fun to drive. Easier to get a decent air cleaner to fit too. With a torque monster like that, it should go down to 18 MPH in high and out-pull anything in the other lane
Wow. A friend of mine started doing this back in the late 60s with his Corvair but I moved and never found out if he ever finished it. I think he was going for a front engine 409 in his. Awesome project, man!
I sense terminal, and I DO mean TERMINAL oversteer, but I'm guessing you arent planning to autocross with it. Wonder if theres a category in the Guinness Book of World Records for maximum polar moment of inertia in a four wheeled conveyance? Way cool though. I'll say one thing sir, you have guts.
You got that right!.... I think even Ralph Nader would approve of this build..... And we all know how Ralph loved these cars, right??...
Hey Dueces, I was gonna mention to you before the "no boring cars" thread got closed, before you write that issue off completely, you should check out the Corvair in that issue. I was actually going to PM Larry T about it as well. Think its something both of you guys would like. The powerglide is kinda eh, but I guess its about the only thing that would fit. Slick, well engineered car, and it doesnt look like a @#$% Hot Wheel...
Gee, I dunno, it might not have enough power with only one carb. It's looking great! Keep up the good work!
I am using a vintage Mallory 348/409 distributor to help reduce the weight a tiny bit, the stock cast iron 409 dist weighs 6 pounds,YIKES the Mallory unit weighs 3 pounds
Totally Bitchin' !!!!!!! Just don't let Ralphy find out...... Reminds me of someone putting a 350 in a Fiero,....Anyone know how that project worked out ? 4TTRUK
There's a bunch of V8 Fieros running around, old SBCs, LS-motors, Northstars. Difference is that in those things the motor's in front of the axle centerline, so worst case you're somewhere around Porsche-numbers at 65% rear. I figure with an iron 409 in back a decently big guy standing on the rear bumper will leave the front wheels in very, very tenuous contact with the ground. Gonna need a group 95 battery, a big radiator, maybe a dry-sump tank, and a few random dumbbells under the front hood...
