I only posted a couple of pics on this thread. I didnt do a whole build thread on it but if there is anything specific you want to know, holler out

 

Not looking for anything specific I just like thumbing through peoples builds for ideas.

 

I had a chance to buy a 48 coupe in high school. I thought they weren’t all that cool at the time, but I didn’t have any imagination.

 

I've always had a soft spot for these. I almost bought one in '67 from a friend-of-a-friend, a '48 Tudor. Very nice red and white rolled and pleated interior, straight body in red primer, fair trim and the most under-dash gauges I'd ever seen. Must have been a dozen of 'em. Don't remember what they all did. Hopped-up flathead (aluminum heads, dual carbs) and three on the tree. All for the princely sum of $500. I didn't buy it as I was singularly unimpressed with the flathead power, pretty sure my mother's 312-powered '56 Ford coupe would have embarrassed it.

The one I really wanted was the lowered '41 Ford coupe he had. Black-on-black, chrome reversed wheels/wide whites and early olds powered. But the $2500 asking price was far beyond my meager budget, the Tudor would have been seriously stretching it. That coupe just oozed cool. I often wonder where it ended up....

 

I, too have been a big fan of these, which is why I started this thread! I've been trying to find some of these in the "little books" but haven't had much success so far. I'll keep looking, though. In the mean time, here's Benny Furtado's '48 touched-by-Winfield convertible (image stolen from Kustomrama):

 

Nice car. Well proportioned top, beautiful color. More taildraggerish than I prefer, but a very well done car anyway.

 

Does anyone have access to an assembled 42 -48 rear axle ? I need the spring perch centers dimension, I remembered them to be 46.5". And could a Merc possibly be different from a Ford in those years. Thanks.

 

My 47 it’s been a three year build and my first build.
It was a rolling when I got it but no wiring etc and the chassis was 99% finished and converted to right hand drive. I did all the work at home in my garage other than the exhaust and getting new perch mounts welded on to the diff (I didn’t trust my welding for that)
Someone had sprayed primer over it in the states before it came to New Zealand so I ended up wet sanding the primer off and buffing the original black paint.

I had that pic on my computer for a while. Didn't realize until now how much of what he did I'm doing to my car.

 

Love the stance! That is something I really need to work on with my 47, the front end needs to be dropped a couple of inches. I guess the best way to do that is to drop the axle, right? I know you can get a couple of inches by reversing the spring eye, and/or using dropping shackles, but I'm thinking probably the best way is to drop the axle. Am I wrong?

 

Yes Richard, a 4”dropped axle and reversed spring eyes will net you 5” of drop. I would stay away from longer shackles as they will increase a swaying action of the suspension that really reduces the handling of the car. The longer the shackles the greater the swaying. I’ve seen 6” longer shackles!!!

 

my '47 had de-arched reversed eye, and two leafs removed - lowest could go with out tires hitting fenders - gas shocks for rear of mid 60's Vette helped the ride. also, had factory stabilizer bar, and anti-sway bar

 

Why do older cars look so good at night?

 

Hides the flaws! I parked in front of a big Christmas Tree and used the light to my advantage.
