I would think so. Anyway, I’ll follow up when the auction is over for reference, but definitely a game changer.

Well that stinks. It's not unheard of to lose a title on an old car, it happens. The Vin tag being removed though... Bummer.

  6. My estimate in post #6 said assuming a clean title. Now with no VIN tag and no title it becomes a parts car.

That’s a bummer. I guess now the question is does the car have items you want?

Seems the right buyer is someone who can use sheet metal, etc, surely isn’t worth buying then looking for a beat up car to swap stuff over to.

That's funny, I thought you were describing Lawyers and Politicians giving advise.

  9. If you have a real sorry car of the same make and year, just transfer your vin plate to this car. Instant restoration!

Not a big problem to get a title in Okla but no vin tag is. Have they looked in the right place?

  12. MPG for a cheap cash ride to work kinda makes sense
Adding another car payment or spending a hunk of $$$ to save $ doesn’t.
I drove my bus regularly to work for a long time. Crappy MPG. But no payment.
    The bus was way cheaper.
$400 per month for gas vs car payment, gas and insurance.
Plan on using the merc for my daily when it on the road.
Can’t wait to replace my nice cozy daily for an old beater with no ac, ps or pb.

  14. Going from memory, if like my old 38 Chevy the VIN is not a tag, it had stamped numbers on the frame by the steering box. The auction company probably looked for some tag on the door pillar and there was none. Or as many old cars back in the day the VIN was really the engine number. Without original engine, there is nothing to show.

Being auctioned, shouldn't the auction company provide a verified bill of sale that you can use for the car, assuming that you can find some numbers stamped somewhere on the car?

Yeah I was thinking the auction company should be able to give enough documentation to get a bonded title, or maybe the DVM would assign a new VIN.

All GM's of this era had a serial number tag on the body. On the trucks they were on the side of the cowl under the hood. I have no idea where they were on the car. We don't have titles, so I don't know what would have been used on that.

Cars/trucks in the 40's did not have a VIN. That came later. They only had engine and body serial numbers.

That’s a very good price IMO, of course my opinion and $5 will get ya a cup of coffees most anywhere.

Yea, if the car had the VIN tag and title, that was a good deal.

Shame about the missing serial number tag and title. I always scratch my head about how this happens.

  26. The vin maybe.
Some states don’t issue titles on old cars

I’ve only held 2 titles on old cars I’ve owned.
Never used em for a tag.

honestly I didn’t even know old cars had em until this place

I probably didn't need the distraction anyway. It isn't like I don't already have enough projects to try to work on...

As a consolation prize, I did end up buying a late 50’s/early 60’s Ford tractor that I can use for parts for the one I use currently around the house. :D Oh, and I also ended up with the trim for around the grill, exhaust manifolds off the 348, and the steering wheel for the 41 that were sold separately… I guess those are my reminders of what almost was… :p

Also, car is headed to San Diego from what I understand. When I was there yesterday, the car still hasn't been picked up. So, I left a note in the car letting the buyer know that I had bought several parts for it if he needed them. I didn't realize it at first since there was so much junk there either in the auction or that was missed, but I ended up with the original seats out of the car, trim around the grill as mentioned, steering wheel, all the interior trim, original gauge cluster, 348 exhaust manifolds, a header kit for a 348 and lots of other misc. parts that came off the car. If he doesn't want the stuff, some of it may make it to the classifieds here.
