I need good advise on unlocking the column in a 41 ford pickup without making a big mess. I don't care if it ruins the lock.
I recently took the lock out of my 40 ford pickup column, if you look on the column drop there is a small dowel about a 1/4" round that holds the lock cylinder in, I drilled a small hole in this and tapped it to take a suitable size bolt (the dowel is only about 1/4" long so don't drill too far and go into the lock) I then used a bar on the bolt to pull the dowel out then using a scribe through the dowel hole you should be able to slide the cylinder out ( a bit of lube may help ) as a bonus the key number is stamped on the cylinder so you can get a key cut, hope this helps. Regards Graham
The door key was the same as the ignition and a lot easer to remove. It has the code stamped on it also.
Grim1930 has it right. I tapped the dowel for a 10-32 screw and pulled it using a small slide hammer. After you get the lock cylinder out you can tap the plug hole and use a setscrew to hold the cylinder in place.
Before even pulling the pin, check out the door cylinder as noted in post 3! There is hole in the edge of the door adjacent to that cylinder...by '41, the set screw was allen head, unscrew that and pull out the cylinder which will have number that matched it and was same as ignition lock if that has not been changed. If they now differ, go on and yank that pin. Every Ford cylinder I have pulled excepth one has had the code on the side. Nearly all still work, too, after a careful flushing out of all the dirt and stuff within.
