Paul, I think your choice with the 47 Plymouth coupe is a great one. Rather than cutting up a (expensive) Zephyr, the 47 is a great car to chop and leave you with more money to spend on parts. Can't wait to see what you're going to do with the Plym. Good luck and thanks for the kind words. Eric

Thanks 1959apache! Color is going to be a "sinister" dark grey. Not going for flat paint. Got a painter who can't wait to do the car, going for perfection. The exact gray is still to be decided though, so many to choose from, then again,I still have a few months to think about it.

I wouldn't go for perfection man.. you will be upset if it gets knicked by a vehicle throwing a rock. I would just keep that in mind. I did that whole prefection thing with a couple cars and I was heartbroken when something happened. It kind of takes the fun out of it. Great progress though. I am getting close to working on my '40 again so I'll be reviewing this thread for some ideas. Keep posting!

My painter is by no means one of the best in the world, nor am I going for a "Riddler". I merely wanted to indicate that he's going to try and paint it to the best of his ability. Sorry for the confusion. I'm not going for an absolute perfect car, this is not realistic nor feasible, but I'll certainly try my stinkin' best to make it as nice as possible.:)

Just a little side track from the build, but this old man just turned 40 today! I want to thank everyone here on the Hamb for the continued support and advice for the novice that I am. I've certainly learned a lot these past few months.Quite amazing that this build thread has had over 27,000 views in such a short period of time!
Looking forward to hearing from you guys(and girls) in the future and maybe even meet a few of you. Here's to the continuation of my build. Cheers!

Many more to ya! This is a really cool build you have going, not surprising so many people have checked in. Don't sweat the paint, like my old biker buddy said, "Chrome don't get ya home".

Had the car transported to Martin this morning for the last sheet metal work. The initial plan was to replace the whole floor, but the metal below the seats was still in such a good shape, the decision has been made to leave that. I cut the foot well metal out as it was overlapping the old and its just a matter of time before we get rust there. What you se through the hole is the top of the chassis to which I'd welded some sheet metal.

I cut out the old tunnel, damn this thing was welded full length, took me more than an hour to cut it out nicely. A new tunnel will be fabricated, slightly offset towards the rear considering the 9 inch diff pinion isn't centered either. Placed a steel tube between the trans and diff to get a look how its going to sit. I realise the actual driveshaft will be larger in diameter, but it will do for now.Plans are to mount a fuel cell between the benchseat and the diff. There's a lot of room there, also the place to mount the airride compressor, battery and all electrics. This way I still have maximum room in the trunk, also cleaner looking. Filler neck will be on the driver side next to the trunk hinge. Therefore the trunk will need to be opened everytime I fill her up.

A small price to pay for a "clean" looking exterior, right?

Attempted my first panel beating job!(under guidance of Martin). Worked on the right hand front fender, taking my time, but came out fairly smooth. This is a dying art which I'd like to learn. Will try and do some more panels, but leaving the final work/smoothing out to the professionals.

  22. Keep up the great work! Like you, I'd like to learn the art form of panel beating. I've seen some fantastic work on the HAMB. There's a wealth of knowledge on here that's for sure.

Getting excited for sure, taking one step at a time, careful planning is the key. I like to look back at times to see whats been accomplished rather than thinking of what still has to be done. Apart from you guys here on the Hamb, most "normal" people don't realise how much work and thinking/planning goes into building a car. Trying to go full speed ahead, usually being slowed down by cashflow. The usual suspect...
