I know, but I like the surpise factor as well. It's probably something most people won't expect when the hood is opened. In general, I want to create a car that's pleasing to the eye, with subtle features, while not screaming "look at me".....

Finally had some time (together with Martin) the last few days to work on the inside of the b-pillar and surrounding area. New steel has been fabricated and welded into place, strengthening the whole area including the roof. Final smoothing of the welds still need to done but the stiffness is back in the b-pillar.

Here are a couple of pics from the outside. Welds still need to smoothed but you get the general idea.

Just taken a few photos of how the car is looking right now. I hope to have the fabrication side of things done in the next 4-6 weeks and can then concentrate on each and every panel (which has at least a few dents in each)

Martin is going to teach me how to use lead next week, so I can smooth out some of the low spots on the roof sides. This way I'll also be able to get rid of the belt line, just leaving the trim line over the full length of the car. Can't wait to get the car ready for the next stage, but its just going to take a bit more patience.....

Thanks. Hoping to start with lead soon to fill the "deep" spots, just don't want too much bondo on the car. Can't wait to get started on the leading part, a new phase/lesson for me. Don't forget I'm a beginner......but willing to learn.

  10. With all due respect...you are failing miserably. This car is going to scream "HEY, LOOK AT ME" everytime you hit the road. :)

I have a rotten case of the f-it's now...I need to get my ass in gear and get back to work on my car.

Thanks Mark. I know the feeling, spending a bit of time every day reading the updates of all the threads I'm subscribed to as well. Some of these builders have become very inspirational to me, giving me some great ideas of what to do. (and not how to do it) We're all here to build and learn, after all.

Eric contacted me about an add I posted about neeeding a set of 40 head lights. He mailed me the head lights and so far has not let me pay him. Not even for postage. One hell of a guy, and one hell of a Hot Rodder!

Let me know what you need Eric and it's yours.

Thanks Wayne, but all credit goes to you. You were kind enough to send me the column drop for free, no charges, to someone on the other side of the world. This influenced me to help some other fellow Hamber's who were looking for parts I had laying around. I can tell you, it feels pretty damn good to help others.

Thanks Ramon. I'm working mostly out of my garage here at home. At the moment the car is at Martin Dijkhof's company for some sheet metal work. He's going to teach me using lead on the body, starting today. Hope to have a few more progress pics later this afternoon.

Wow, Martin Dijkhof is one of the best here in holland, he did my fathers Jaguar E-type a couple of years ago. Hope to see some pic's soon!

Just got home from working on the car all day. First, here are some pics of the rear window which has been completely replaced as it was in quite a bad state with regards to rust.
Sorry for the elongated pics, but had to reduce them in order to post them here.

Well it was finally the first day for me to start to learn about leading. Went over to Martin Dijkhof this morning and got a two hour lesson from the man himself. The first pic shows the old situation. Even though it looks ok in the pic, there were a few low spots which had to be tackled. I want to use minimal bondo on the car, so smoothing the body with lead was the option I went with. Also started filling the belt line after welding the trim holes. What you see in the pics was my 6 hours of work progression with some final filing and sanding to done tomorrow. Once this part is completed, I'll move on to the b-pillar area and the driver door.
I'm starting to get the hang of leading, but I'll certainly improve as I gain more experience. It was a great day for sure!

  29. With this being your first time leading would you say that it's terribly difficult to do?

Terribly difficult, no. But I did have a good teacher. The most difficult part I thought was working out when the lead is at the right temperature. If not hot enough it won't budge, too hot and it will flow like water. When the lead is applied to the metal surface (which also takes practice), heat the lead for a few seconds and feel with the wooden "spoon" if you can move it. If not, apply a little heat and try again. Remember that the heat will stay in the lead for a little while. Patience is what it takes. The filing part isn't too difficult either, just use your hands a lot and feel the contour. Once again, patience is required, but you can learn it.
