Some things are better left to other people, this includes paint and upholstery. I would hate to ruin the car by doing an amateur paintjob myself or trying to stitch leather......I know my limitations.;)

Finished off the window garnish, but still need to fabricate a small piece on the right hand side to cover the part of the exposed door. The inside bend on the right will require a little bondo to get a smooth roundness, because I was unable to get it to make the small curve. All in all, I'm happy with the end result.

Mounted the radiator on its frame after re threading all the holes and getting ss bolts and nuts. The problem is the electric fan. It's not wide enough.(by an inch or so) Now I can mount it on its side, but then it's too wide. (and the overpressure flaps will be on the side......not pretty.) So it looks like I'll have to make a plastic frame which screws into the side lips of the radiator to which the fan can be mounted. Here are the pics of the radiator.

WOW! I've just spent the last two days reading through the entire build thread and I'm amazed and impressed with the quality of workmanship you've shown. I love the in depth details you post on everything you do. I can't even begin to imagine how difficult it must be to build a car on the other side of the world. If this car doesn't make it in TRJ, I don't know what will. Keep up the awesome work! Subscribed.

Looking very good Eric! Nice work!

  6. Fantastic work as always Eric. The window moldings look great and I know you'll figure out a good way to mount the electric fan.

Thanks Hivolt5.0. In order to mount the electric fan without losing air to gaps, I'm probably going to mount a 5mm plastic frame (like a picture frame) between the radiator and fan. Maybe someone else here in Hamb land has any other ideas?

  10. If you get a chance, could you post a picture of the radiator and fan. I'm having a hard time visualizing what you are describing. But as you said, with the wealth of knowledge here on the HAMB I know someone will have some great suggestions.

Here are a couple of (dark) pics. The first one shows the black mounting lip for the fan (on the right side of the vertical hose) and the second one shows the distance between the end of the fan shroud and the mounting lip. So I need to "bridge" this gap on both sides.

Maybe a piece of sheet metal, bent to fit and riveted to the fan shroud on each side?

That may work. Or maybe a bracket on each side of the shroud and then bolted on to the radiator support. Thanks for your input!

  14. Yeah, it doesn't look like you would need much. Either yours or Eli's input would work well.

i would use a piece of flat wide enough to use the 2 bolts for the fan bracket on each side sondwich the shroud between the 2 that way the vibrations wont crack the shroud and would be a very solid mount

Eric, how about a piece of U channel attatched to your radiator mounts with sheet screws, the openings would be facing each other with deep enough channel to make up for the shortness in width.
Then also attach the same channel at the bottam so that you can slide your fan/shroud in or out as needed for maintenance:D:Dit would basically rest in place......or you could put removeable fasteners at the top of the channel to keep it in place.

Thank you for the input cowboyinachair. It is appreciated!

Sounds good Frank! My only concern is still this very small lip on the radiator to hold it all in place. Im going to the hardware store tomorrow and have a look around there for different ideas and materials. You also mention these sheet screws (like the fan supplier did as well), I suppose I'll have to try them.....even though they don't sound strong enough to hold the whole fan assembly. I'll give it a shot! Thanks for your input Frank, you may have just given me an idea or two!

It's electric fan time! Went to the hardware store and got the required materials to extend the width of the shroud. Mounted the aluminium strip and did go ahead with the self tapping steel screws and mounted it on the radiator. Going to check and modify a few clearance, then paint and mount the radiator and fan back in tomorrow. Here are a few pics from today. Thank you to everyone for their suggestions!

Thanks Mick! Yes, the plan is to have the car on the road in 2012, it's just going to be a question of when.......at the moment I'm still waiting for my paint to dry on my fan supports....very exciting stuff!

A Merry Christmas to you too! The fan is made by Cooling Components, which I ordered when I bought the Walker radiator. I was told "trim to fit" not "add to fit"..................I chose for an electric fan due to no loss of engine hp (I need all the horses I can get.:D:D:D ), being able to cool the engine when it's shut down and a clean look.

Finished the fan today. I was going to mount it to the radiator but a few of the stainless steel screws broke so I'm going to have to get a few new ones after the weekend. Anyway, the electric fan is done and nearly looks like it came from the factory this way. Have a Merry Christmas everyone!
