One of our local racers used to race an original 68 HEMI Cuda. He raced it for many years with the original block. Switched to an aftermarket block and made more horsepower. Found out the original block was shifting and robbing horsepower.

  2. definetly Canadian . I always try to buy factory original hi performance stuff . At the end of the day if I want or need to resell
I will get my money back or more , You would be lucky to get 70 percent on an aftermarket part you bought 6 months ago in the original packaging,
    blocks included

Chicago connection will sell you a new one for less than $3,000.

  4. Ok little update...

First thanks again to everyone for their knowledge and info.

So I went back over there this afternoon and asked him if I could pay to have the block tanked and magged/sonic tested on my dime. He asked what I planned on doing with it immediately. I told him about my dad's charger and his response was "This block is for a guy with a real hemi car that needs a 68 date code and that's why it's so much". He then told me that he wouldn't lower the price nor let me test it at all. So.... You guys were pretty much on the money on all aspects. I guess it's time to fire up the Google machine and look at some complete motors.

At the end of the day my dad will love anything that gets that car on the road again. I just wanted it to be something special. But then again.... Even a modern elephant making almost 500hp is plenty special in its own right

Thanks again and Merry Christmas everyone

As long as its not too thin to take another overbore, which 98% of the original 427 FE blocks out there are...and that's probably why he wouldn't let you sonic test it. I looked at buying one in the states (for about 1/3 of what you were looking at) and heard through someone else that he had already sonic tested it. I asked him to send me the maps, he declined, I passed.

    Not a Hemi but.......
Back in the days when you could buy most anything reasonably priced (compared to now), I bought a Nova L79/327 block, still standard bore for the now unheard of price of $200.
These things were hard to find even back in the 80's.
I was smart enough to ask him if I could get my money back if it ended up being cracked.
My intension was to do a full rebuild with a lot of NOS parts, so I had already planned on having it Magnafluxed. These things were prone to cracking in the main webs if run hard.
It indeed was cracked in one main web, but could have had more, he just stopped looking after he found the first one. It only cost $25 (early 80's) so I wasn't out much $$$.
I guess in those days (some) people had a sense of integrity because he really surprised me when he handed me $225 back.
I doubt that would happen nowadays.
Two things I learned some years after this though; a good block weldor can fix these types of cracks and you will NEVER, EVER find (any) rare blocks for $200 again.

He probably won't let anyone check the block because some one might buy it on speculation the way it sits (but not for $6000.00). If he checks it and it's not worth rebuilding, he's got a large paper weight on his hands that might bring a little more than scrap price for garage art/coffee table/????.

I sure would consider building a good 440 (or wedge stroker), they would hang with a "stock" Hemi everytime.
