automatics will always be more forgiving. Bud of mine cracked his P case and took the gears off the pinion in his 59 by sidestepping the clutch with a weak 350 engine.
Ben There , Done That. Simple equation Big Torque over Big Tires = Broken Parts. 9" ford only way to go. Much cheaper solution, Narrow HARD tires, lots of smoke, not so many broken pieces. and thats my 2 cents worth.
like most have said - no - ran a mild 396 in my '09 1964 with a nice 4sp....allways broke the spider gears....did I say mild....really mild...?.....will make a post about it some day....it was a 409 car -that in 1975 - nobody really cared.....
I've blown rear ends & axle shafts in cars ranging from a stock 60 Falcon 144 3sp to 427 63 Fords. If your out there having too much fun sometimes things break.
Nope! No way in hell! We used to break those things regularly, with a near stock 283 and skinny rock-hard 'hockey-puck rubber' tires!!!! Mart3406 ===========
My 55 running a 427 425 H.P. 4 speed ,traction bars, & replacing more third members than a care to remember, some one tire fires, some posis. Of those breakable rear ends BRAND NEW 4:88 Posi shelled out some big $$$ for it back in 69, running on the street it lasted about a month and I destroyed every part inside that housing. Oh I forgot those tooth pick axles I kept about 10 sets in the garage at any given time ,even had a pair in the trunk with a spare 3rd member. I know it might be a hard pill to swallow, but save yourself a lot of time, and get a 57 -64 Olds. Pont. I wont say 9 _)(* F$#d,or if you have some $$$ get a dana 60 and drive the wheels off of it !!!
As said by many don't do it, you can use 8 3/4 power loc parts in there and use 30 spline axles and make those parts much stronger, but at the end of the day you are still working with a n 8.2 inch ring gear and a tiny pinion. You can put a 9 inch in for less money.
