I don't know if you all have ever run across this. My 440 Magnum RB according to my 1970 Challenger owners manual says the oil capacity should be 7 qts. with a new oil filter. The car is an automatic. I changed the oil and filter the other day and put 6 quarts in it. The chrome aftermarket dipstick showed about a quart over the full mark with 6 quarts. I ordered an OEM oil stick from Mancini and it showed the same. I forgot to look at where the level was before I drained the oil. I am afraid to put any more oil in it but also afraid not to put enough in it. I think the oil pan is stock. Sump is about an inch below the front crossmember. The drain is at the rear of the pan (center sump). I have read where some put in the 7 quarts and remarked their oil stick. I know SBF and SBCs but it has been a learning experience with MOPARS. I have not owned the car very long. All of this is getting in the way of working on my 30 Coupe. I would appreciate any guidance you Mopar guys have.
I wouldn’t lose any sleep over keeping 6 quarts in it. That’s what I keep in my 440 with a stock pan.
Do some reading here - https://store.440source.com/Oil-Pans/departments/54/ Find your particular body style, year, verify the pan depth and find info about the dipstick. They seem to have some good info on oil pans. Mike
Mike VV, thanks for the 440 website information. I contacted them and a Mike responded with this: "To simplify the answer, all of the car dipsticks are marked the same regardless of what pan they are used with, but only the Hemi would have the larger capacity pan (6 qts + 1 in the filter), so it is easy to see why the public would be confused by the published information. If your car came with a 383 or 440, it would have a 4 qt pan on it, for a total of 5 including the capacity of the filter. The oil is going to fill to the same mark on the dipstick in either case." With engine swaps that someone else did, you never know what the engine came out of. My oil pan number is "971", which makes it a (4 qts + 1) pan. The owners manual is also correct because I do not have the 6 pack setup. If I did, and it was a stock 6 pack engine, it would have the larger capacity oil pan. The standard 440 comes with a 4 + 1 quarts oil pan. Thank you all
