I understand the casting date for a 454 is in the back by the intake manifold but nothing I can find looks like a casting date . I would like to know so I can sell this engine. It's been in my shop for 20+ years and I'm just not getting to it. I just as well use the money for a current project. Any help is appreciated. Thank you in advance. Larry Edit: I have this information: www.nastyz28.com: (copied directly from their page) 1401544 1975-87 454 truck Mortec.com: (copied directly from their page) 14015445...454.......78-90...2 or 4 bolt Sorry, I can't read all of the characters of this one..
That is an ‘86 454/240 horse engine, it may have come from a C-20 or C-30 truck, or the AKS suffix engines were also sold to MercCruiser for marine use.
I'm not questioning your knowledge one bit, I really appreciate your help, I would just like to learn where you determined it's a '86? Larry
No problem, I should have mentioned that I used the AKS engine suffix located behind the timing cover.
he found the listing for the AKS suffix https://nastyz28.com/gm-chevy-codes/chevy-engine-codes-suffix-12.php The partial VIN would help if you'd clean it up some...but it looks like CG3... C means Chevy Truck, G is the year 1986 you might find a casting date on the side of the block, above the oil pan rail, look for a letter followed by a few numbers, such as B 22 6
Yup, found one of these at Pic-N-Pull out of a C 30 School District truck. One of best deals we ever got cheap.
This is the only thing on the passenger side: This is the only thing on the driver's side, it's above the oil filter: Larry
may not be a casting date on it, hmmm... but anyways, it's a 80s Mark IV 454 block, not much special about that. You can also pull the valve covers and see what's inside, the heads should have a casting number and casting date code also. They should be peanut port heads, open chamber with 2.07/1.72 valves, I think. Some time in the late 80s they started putting 4 bolt mains on these...I had one in Plan II, it went pretty darn quick with some different innards, heads, blower, etc.
That K24 may be a casting date. Nov. 4th 84. Kinda early for a 86 application. But if you think first in last out, it could have been pulled from bottom of pile for a early 86 usage.
