How's your imagination? If you look REAL close, you can see the old hot rod hauler hidden under all that dirt and barn dust. Well, that's what I saw when I was draggin it home. I got so wrapped up in building the hot rod for this to haul, that I lost the vision on this one.

Originally I wanted a low slung glider but recently I was wanting to make into an old style shop parts chaser that was used to haul a 50's-60's era drag car, my '34 coupe. Realilty set in and now that won't happen. Building one car is enough for now. It goes back to its previous owner sometime this month. I need the room back in my garage.

    not that i've ever seen.

there are some very talented owners/builders who try very hard to make these cars into cool customs, but i've never seen anyone succeed. i've seen a couple made into cool hot rods, but never a cool custom.

    just my $0.02...

Hmm... I think I´m off a different opinion!!! I think a car like the one Jake has built is one hell of a cool custom!! But if I turn it the other way around I have never seen any cool hot-rods of this models!! I think they do much better as custom cars, specially the coupes and the sedanettes!!

Do you have any pictures of the cool hot-rods?

Yeah it does look cool, don't know what that earlier post was about. But I thought that car looked familiar, so I went through some old magazines and I'm pretty sure it looked like this in the 70's...

While not a full blow traditional custom by HAMB terms, the Detroit Autorama folks cl***ified it as "radical custom", and put me in that cl*** because of the top chop (3 1/2 inchs). Also the hood was pancaked, everything shaved, nosed, decked and both the headlites and taillights were frenched.

The car ran awsome and got me from coast to coast a couple of times.

My suggestion, get your car running soundly, do the whole drivetrain, suspension, brakes, etc, then start on the "kustomizing". Your tastes might change in the meantime AND you could start driving it while your doing little bits of the bodywork here and there. Just my 2 cents.

it's realy the front end i'm having a hard time with. i have'nt seen many with custom grills and the ones i have seen have'nt exactly blown my socks off.. the back ends look great all shaved with the fenders welded to the body and a set of skirts riding just an inch or two off the pavement. i've got a cool pair of Hudson taillights for mine and i plan to bring the rear bumper in much closer to the body than stock. i've already started welding the rear fenders to the body (while i'm back there fixing all the rust anyway) and a one off pair of "Zypher style" skirts are in the plans aswell.

as far as the front goes i'm at a loss. i sold the PERFECT (repop) stock grill cause somebody (who we won't mention) told me he had an Olds grill for me. i even bought the front half of an Olds hood to graft onto the Chevy so it would match the lines of the Olds grill. well it appears that that deal has fallen through. so now i have no grill at all.
i'm tempted to turn it into a g***er now. just throw a MOON tank up in place of the grill and be done with it. i'm afraid that the old straight six would'nt exactly induce any ***** ******* for the compe***ion, at the drag strip, though.
i've concidered frenching the head lights the traditional way but lately i'm thinking more and more of doing frenched Buick style headlight/marker lights. i just realy dig em and they look good on that black primered one Mikes51 just posted.
i'd LOVE to chop it but i know better. i would NEVER have it on the road if i went that far. i'm trying to keep this one simple. i don't plan to own this car forever. it will very likely be sent on down the road shortly after completion to give me a little extra coin to work on a couple hot rods i have in the works. i'm trying to keep it as low budget and simple as possible while still doing a nice job and creating an attractive custom.
still, if i had a big ole firebreathing motor at my disposal i'd be tempted to straight axle the front, radius the rear wheel openings around some fat rubber and mag wheels and then throw that MOON tank up front and be done with it. it SOUNDS simple anyway.

Hey Moparsled, here's Savage's Chevy coop:

Does he still have it? Haven't seen him around at any rod runs lately...

And my brother's '47 Aerosedan...tho technically not a "kustom", it has the flavorings:

And a coop *** convertible...don't know much about it other than it was a coop...

Savage's coupe is pretty cool. i'm on the fence with the whole shavin the quarter window thing but i've seen more than one 46-48 Chevy coupe that has pulled it off nicely.

still, what to do for a grill??? i'd still like to use the Olds grill... wonder if Denise locks her garage???? = D

KB, 1942 Grilles are a lot different than the '46-8's. albeit a lot rarer...if you could find one of those, and use the Buick headlights like mikes51 Chevy coop, that'd kinda solve your grille conumdrum...

well.. add me to the mix.. I bought a 47 chevy coupe a few weeks ago.. and am collecting parts.. have most of the running gear solved, and a spare olds grille, and a "not so perfect, but fair" chevy grille. I think mine is gonna be pretty stock looking from the get go.. I like the full fadeaways and skirts, but I already have a "custom" in the garage.. (do I need another?)

I wouldnt do a "g***er" just cuz there so "mainstream" and I like practicality..

so mike, if you need anything let me know (via pm)

I am pulling the stock motor, trans, rear.. and the grill(S) i have mentioned are avail..

To answer your "thought", it's YES, my garage is always locked....well except for Autorama Saturday nite where not only didn't the garage door get closed and locked after the party BUT the light was left on all nite so that the theives could actually see what they wanted to steal. :D I guess it's a good thing all my friends and neighbors are so honest.;) Besides, ALL my grill bars along with both bumpers are etched with ID numbers just incase they come up "missing" so don't even try, bub:p

I know of two Olds grills. Jeff, Sawzall, has one and if he's offering to sell you should probley jump on it. The other one is hanging on the showroom wall of Advanced Plating in Nashville. The grill has been completely redone and is just breathtaking. Steve Tracey wants $3500.00 for it. Just to let you know in case you haven't priced out plating lately, the plating alone for an Olds grill in decent shape from Advanced is $3000.

Here's my photoshop of a custom grille, right next to a stock one, and a third pic with the custom grille and Buick headlights. Uses all 46 Chevy grille parts. Basically, the ends of the two longer lower bars are cut off, the surround piece is extended down to the bumper pan, and the upper 3 narrow bars are replaced with shortened lower bars. Cool like an Olds grille but totally custom and can be built with all '46 Chevy grille parts. What do you think?
