Any one out there tell me what the Pinion bearing preload is on these old rears? I also would like to know what backlash is used when you set up the ring and pinion. I have the necessary gaskets coming and want to have some idea what to do when the parts come in. I most likely will set up a 4.11 first and I also have a 4,44 but I would think they will have the same torque values. Thanks.

  2. search in the tech archive. There is a link to an article on the proper way to set it all up.

You lucky ****er- I have 3.78's for mine, my 4.11 ring was BAD. I'd like to have all the available ratios someday.

Thanks I will give it a shot but so far nothing shows up. If nothing more I set up many rear ends and I may just have to wing it.

OK finally found the info--Evidently no one here knew so I will post the figures--Backlash is .003 -.008
Pinion preload is a little weird but you tighten the large nut until you get a turning torque of 12 to 17 inch LB. of rotating torque. Carrier preload is by gaskets on the end bell's and usually in the area of a total of .032 or .016 on each side-This will vary so its a feel thing so there isn't a lot of drag on the carrier races. This should be a piece of cake. Not exactly a ford 9 inch but still a Ford.
