Hey everybody. I have a 46 ford special deluxe flat head v8. Well I took it out the other day about a 5 min drive to gas station. She ran perfect then I filled her up and started her. Seemed fine. I took off and she was sputtering in all gears like she was starving for gas however she was back firing like a pig and had no power. I thought vaporlock ??? So I took gas cap off checked vents all fine and still did the same. then I figured maybe coil was an issue or voltage regulator so I changed both. Still having same issue. If she cools down completely she runs fine until heats up then same BS. What am I missing here. Fuel lines and tank clean. Carbs functioning fine. It seems to run like it’s a timing issue when it does this. Like the coil is doing it. I’m stumped. Any more intelligent fellows. Please chime in. Regards. Alfie.
Pop the distributor off and make sure the advance is still operational and not locked up? Maybe bad condenser?
^Does sound like a bad condenser. A thought. Awhile back I had a problem like this that turned out to be a faulty ignition switch. Turn it on one time and no problems, turn it again and problems. Thought it was fuel at first. I put a voltmeter on the car and instantly noticed the voltage changing wildly with every turn of the switch.
^^ I agree, bad condensor. I had that happen many years ago with a '46-'48 59AB in my '39 coupe. Car would start but not rev up. Changed condensor, perfect! Dave
