Im contemplating the next project. I have recently aquired a 76 Lincoln Mark IV (the ugliest car ever manufactured). Its got a 460, c-6 combo. 60,000 miles, Runs well, even though it sat for 10 years. I really want to build a shoebox. Would the 460/C6 fit in the engine bay? If its too much trouble, I'll sell off the lincoln, but I thought I would ask you guys before I do anything rash. thanks in advance.
You might want to checkout www.shoeboxford.com and ask. Some of those fellas will have the knowledge you seek. dv
Shouldn't be a problem and will have torque to spare. I like torque.... Good HP numbers sound impressive. Good torque numbers make it impressive! I must beg to differ about that Lincoln being the ugliest car ever made though. While most cars of that era were no prize appearance wise, compared to such current vehicles as the new Beetle, the Honda Element and that stupid Scion thing that looks like a ****ing toaster with wheels, that Lincoln is a styling achievement!
This might be a stupid question, but....... Isnt a merc of that era a bigger car than a ford? (I hope I'm wrong). If its not was any work required to clear the crossmember, or could you just get away with custom motor mounts? A pic of your engine would be groovy . Its a free drivetrain that works great. I know its alot of motor, but I'll use it if its not too much trouble.
I've seen an Elephant (426 hemi) in a '50 Ford. It fit, barely, and they don't get much wider than that.
Putting a small block in a car makes it cookiecutter. Sure, you might be more reliable than my flathead... but then again, whats better than a flathead? -Rick
The bigger the better. once it's in there I'm sure you won't be sorry you did it. A 472 Caddy might not belong in a 55 Chev. but thats where mine is going
I have seen some pics of the 460s in the shoeboxes and they do fit but you will need to move the radiator in front of the core support, the 6 cylinder versions had the radiator there so moving it will be no problem. I too have a 460/C-6 looking for a home so I could be doing the same if a decent body comes along. Jeff
I have one in my 50 merc with a must II cross ...no problems with the width but I did set it way back for oil pan clearance {damper at the cross}which did require firewall mods....
Tim, If Wayne Jones in Indy can squeeze a 392 hemi into his shoebox, you should be able to get a 460 in yours. Discuss with Tom and see what he says. BTW, we saw you guys at Radio Radio. Was in the roadster cruizing around. Too nice of a night to stop and listen to bands in a bar.... John
Ha Ha!! You should have come in. We had a great time! I spoke with Tom earlier this week. He stated it could be done, but would take alot of work. Just thought I would see if any fellas on the board had actually performed this conversion. I'm still in the thought process stage. I think this motor in a shoebox would rock. I just want to make sure i had some idea of what I was getting into. BTW, did I say you should have come in tonight? later, Tim
Theres a guy in Texas who has a 460 in a 50 Ford. He also has the 50 set up to pull a goose neck trailer! He said the 460 REALLY fills up the engine compartment. Yes, its possible to do it but its difficult and will leave you with permanent difficulties in maintenance. He made fenderwell headers. Tight fit I have more pics Maybe some of the Texas boys can tell you more about the car.
by all means if you have the original equipment , live it and love it. BUT for those who have to improvise bigger is better in my book. Here is a couple pics of my 50 with a 429 c6. Clipped with I'm not exactly sure....late 60's p***. ford? I think. Any help on that would be cool.......... Anyway, plan on tunneling if you go with the c6. Whoever installed mine didnt and just raked the motor and I'm have no fun getting the vibes out of it, even with a new two piec shaft. I reccomend a 4 speed. Anyway heres some pics to help
