So I decided against the mustang 2 front clip on my 47 Ford Coupe and purchased a 3 inch drop crossmember from Speedway. My question is this. I'm not sure what it's called but on the front transverse leaf spring in the center of the spring there is a bolt that keeps the leafs together. It has a square head on top that mates to the crossmember that has a matching square hole. I ordered the 3 inch drop crossmember and as I finally got to getting the original crossmember out, I tried installing the new one only to find that the hole on the new crossmember is round and does not fit the square head (round hole too small). The Mickey Mouse in me pondered the idea of grinding the square head round or drilling the round hole so it fits onto the square head but I feel like I should get some expert advice before doing something potentially stupid. Any advice or ideas out there? All help is appreciated and will be for a good cause. Preserving hot rod history.
You could C-clamp the spring pack together and change the square bolt for a round bolt...Easy enough.........
Why not use a square file and make the hold square? And all Original Ford Springs will fit forever Anyway will do it. the purpose of the bolt head is to prevent the spring to move sideway's. If it does that its OK.
Thanks for the help. Contacted the Speedway tech and he said to just drill out the hole to the edges of the square head rest snug onto it. Hope they know what they're talking about. Seems like they do anyway.
