Oh I agree, definitely not going to be as common as the more inexpensive GM offerings, however, it was still a GM product, I would think plenty were sold, it just seems that they are rarer than grills from smaller car makes from the same era. I see more Merc accessory wheels listed (by maybe 10:1 !!!!) than 48 cad grills, and the accessory wheels are supposed to be very rare! I guess I got a steal on my grill for $50, even though it needed some work, and still needs a little metal finishing to get it perfect for chrome.

I wonder if guys don't realize that they are as desired as they are and just don't think to put them up for sale? Probably much bigger pain in the *** (shipping etc) for their return than a steering wheel as well.

Here are some pics I just found of the firewall replace, thought I'd post them. The original one had no rust at all, but past owners decided to manually rot it away by drilling tons of holes! It was easier to just replace the whole firewall than to patch one hole at a time.

The firewall pics are from about 5-6 months ago, i dreaded having to do that part.

Ive been blocking all day! Its amazing how many low spots that the AFS sanding blocks find that Durablocks don't. Those sanding locks were one of the wisest investments Ive made during this build. Its almost impossible to make a low spot with the AFS sanders, the Durablocks you have to really tread very carefully.

I was going to use Slick-n-Sand on the whole car, but I may not. Ive got it really straight now, I may just shoot click-n-sand on the front end where I just did all of the fresh bodywork, block that, and then shoot the entire car in plain high build primer.

those blocks are the best,,,,,you are right,,its virtually impossible to make a low spot..

I don't have any AFS sanders yet, but I'd really like to. Its just a matter of spending the cash on the whole kit. I don't like Durablocks either. Used em a few times and they just didnt seem to work the way I wanted to. I stick to my 3M rubber blocks and hand files, they seem to do the trick.

Never tried Slick N Sand either, guess I'm old fashioned, haha. You and your Quantum fillers, AFS sanders, Henrob torches, a regular bodyshop supply house over there.

Slick n sand is fairy inexpensive ($60-70 a gallon), and works really well. Its almost as good as Sikkens Polysurfacer (which is probably the best "sprayable body filler"), but The Sikkens is around $60 a quart!

A friend of mine is a 37+ year bodyman. He got me into the AFS sanders. He bought me one to keep for a week, and that was it, I was sold. He uses them everyday, and his set is several years old, so they are built to last.

Being that it is a hobby for me, its more fun when the tools and supplies make the job easier.

Oh absolutely, I'm always lookin for the quicker, not necessarily the easier way out. AFS sanders as well as some more longboards are next on the list.

Get back out there and drip some primer on that thing!

Noooo, your supposed to leave the dust and let the primer pick it up. It helps to fill! Do your fingers hurt yet? Seems like your really motoring pased few weeks.

They dont hurt at all, but Im not going to make this post into another AFS sanding block adverti*****t, not until I receive a check from them, hahah. No really, not only do those blocks work well, they are easy on your hands. I dont have any fatigue at all after several days in a row of using them.

I got a lot done this week, I took my week of vacation time from work from this past tuesday, until tomorrow to get the car from where it was, to all the bondo work done, and in primer. I did the same thing last year, when I was doing the rear fenders, but I didnt reach my goal. This year, my goal will be reached, as of tomorrow.

She's all taped up, masked, and jacked up, ready to be tacked off and primed tomorrow. Ive been waiting for this for a long time.

    Chad,

How do you like the Hutchins (?) air sander? Not sure if you got the orbital and/or longboard. Would like to know some info, model and your opinion? Thanks

Here's one. It was from the Old Style Weekend Show posted by mikaelmtb. Pretty sweet except i'm not crazy about the trunk being filled, but hell I'd still take it!

Mine is the 2000 hustler in line, not the orbital. I rarely use it anymore, except for cutting in a body line here and there, in the pic it was out for cutting in the "steps" on the front gravel guard. I used to skim a panel, let it fully harden, and then go to town with the Hutchins. A bodyman friend of mine taught me to skim, and start sanding with 40 grit paper when the filler just starts to kick. That will level off the filler very quickly, and do a much straighter job than an air file will.

Ok guys, here she is in primer. I mounted the bumpers, grill and headlights, and one piece of trim for a bit of mock up. The trunk has not been done yet, it still needs some work to the lower inner frame, some metal work, and bodywork. I threw on a hubcap just for the hell of it, but the final result will be caddy sombrero's. I will be running 4.25" WW Goodyear Super Cushion bias ply tiers as well. The appletons aren't mounted yet, as Im still working on getting the exact brackets for the car.

    Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. It all looks *****en Chad. The grille and headlamps turned out just right. Boy you coulda ****ed those headlamps up real quick w/ the ever popular "tunnel job"-haha! Your car looks like it came straight out of the "little books". Nothing quite beats a 3/4 rear shot of a 41-48 custom. That last pic rules!! Wouldya lookit that ***!! Keep up the great work.
