hi everyone, got my car going with a new condenser, still wondering if i should go ahead and get new points and venture into putting them in or if i should leave well enough alone. should a person remove the distrib to install the points or what is the trick? i've been reading about some sort of a fixture? just not sure what to do??? thanks don
Remove two bolts to front cover, snap off cap and leave it dangling, remove rotor, and distributor comes right out. With good points (and there are plenty of bad ones available from the repro places...) setting gap carefully results in very close setting of dwell...with bad points, dwell of the two points won't synch properly. Set timing on middle line when done, then use Ford's field expedient timing procedure, which has been reproduced on line: http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_engines_distr-timing.htm I have a tech preparing on these distribs, but so far no photographer...but try to improvise a degeree wheel, a plastic protractor affixed either to your old rotor or to the rear drive of the distrib. Now you can test dwell degrees of both points together and each separately to see if all is correct. Go to advanced search: try using flathead and dwell, timing, TDC, etc., and also search under "Crab", the name applied to this basic '42-48 distributor when it is wearing the '42 cap.
If it's running good and you are happy with it leave it. If you want to change the points set and time it go here: http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_engines_distr-timing.htm Late PS: Heres your second JR opinion...Thanks Bruce
