ok today i looked at this section of the build because im still measuring multiple times before i start to weld body mounts i want to make shore i know where everything sits

i have the wheels centers so the spare fenders show me the rad will sit to close to the pulley's so i will have to relocate the motor and trans back 4-6" which to me is no big deal compared to installing this motor on my old chassis and then installing disk brake kit, power steering rack and four link so just moving the motor back a lil is less work for me i have allot of room to move the motor back as you can see in the pic
i am reusing the stock 47 radiator as the front fenders bolts right to it and all i have to do is weld a square to across the chassis and drill two holes to mount it
i cannot find the brand new box of body bushing i had so i will have to buy some again
heres some pics so you see what i see
i wont get much done for a few days moneys tight being laid off and all, my wife wants me to buy but im tring to hold out spending anything right now

to give you an idea of how far i have to move back this is how you bolt the fender to the rad

  2. Joel,
I just read the whole thread. Man thats a s&*^$%#t load of work brother! I dont know what condition your rad is in but if its no good {like mine was } one that fit VERY nicely is a 73-74 ford pick-up with a 300 cid six cyl. Same core measurements and the advantage of nice big wide side mounting flanges to cut down for brackets. I dont know ny smog reg's, but toss the smog pump and you got NO lower hose issues.{at least, thats what it looks like to me. Great job cant wait too see it finished.

Sometimes you have to walk away from it. Take a break, a few hours or even a day or two, and it will all fall together like magic the next time you dive into it.

ok i put my big girl panties on lol and got to work :D
(for the record i do not wear panties)
i started this at 7 p.m. and finished at 12
ok i removed two brackets off the old chassis grinded and clean them up some
i removed a section of u channel type brace off the donor car floor and cut two small section's out
i welded the two small sections to the underside of the parallel square tubes
and placed the brackets on the frame and tac welded them in place this will raise my boy off the frame the way i want it
so far i have 4 body mounts done the next set i have the holes drilled in the frame with a bolt and bushing mounted but will rework it so the rubber has full contact ready for some pics cause im sleepy

i have the garage but its not wide where i can work with the doors open full on both sides plus i do not want to weld inside garage, the leaves are from my wifes tree  i hate the tree she loves it, reminds us of her mom who passed away, neighbors are cool they know i am a good guy and i clean up every night and pack all my toys away when i am done playing :D

i thought about the smog pump but i really want this motor to run efficient
i have looked for photos of that radiator you mentioned but can't find any worst case senario ill move the motor back 6" its a small price to pay to have the fenders and all line up mint

can't make the meeting i have a wedding to go to today but i really want to start going

Ford52PU,plym49 thats the best advice for anyone building a car if you can't get it the first time walk away for awhile and it will smack ya like a ton of bricks
i didn't even think about the car the whole day i was out with my son at birthday parties and when i got home as i walked passed the car the light bulb went on i knew what i had to do from start to finish

ok last night and today i did the rails for the trunk to get the shape and idea for floor pans and tank mounting
first i welded angle iron to the sides of the inner fender wells and connected racthet straps and tugged them in to where i wanted them, then i reused those x braces that where in the car and welded them across to tie the side together
then i made bent iron to shape the trunk to get some more room and then did the lower now i put the tank for mock up i do not like where the filler neck is is it possible to have it moved to the side like the factory tank was ?
with the car dropped it still clears the tank and when raised its up there :D
are you ready for more pics

You absolutely can move the filler neck on that gas tank. A radiator shop will do it for you. You can also do it yourself. If you braze or weld to a fuel tank, or use an open flame for soldering, run the exhaust of a car or diesel through the tank. The exhaust gas has no oxygen in it so you will not blow up, and the heat of the exhaust also dries the tank out.

i have been inspired by this thread home made metal shaping tools and Let's see some sheet metal shaping
i am at the point of my project that i have to make a section in order to continue with my build it is the rear section of the trunk where it latches closed its so rusted i will attempt to make a new section
i have allot of ideas and will start later today to get the tools in order here is what i have to start with it might look solid but its allll bondo

thanks man that takes a load off my shoulders
i might want it on the side or trimed down and have it under the bumper shroud and make a little door to flap up if that make any sense

Yes, perfectly. Hey Bro, you can swap a frame; you will have no problem relocating that filler tube. :)

i was going to make it out of thick sheet metal but wanted something stronger so i to an angle iron and sliced a lot of cuts into it which makes it flexible i then took the extra floor i cut out of the black donor car flip it upside down and clamped the angle iron to it to get the shape and then i tac welded the slot so it would hold and im happy with my first try considering i started this at 9p.m to 11:30 i will have to get a small square tube and do the same to create the outer lip ( look at last photo for reference)
next chance i get i will bolt the trunk back on and line the frame up square, once i know its perfect i will clean what i can and weld it in
    ready for more pic:D

ok welded the beam in with an extra cross beam for strength
i have to dry out the tank so i can cut the filler neck off so i can mount the tank for mock up once this is done im laying in the floors and weld up the sides with sheet metal
the photos my son took :) for a 3 yr old he is good:cool:

i have two ways i could go with the filler neck
1> have it relocated to the side so i can reuse the 47 factory filler hole and gas cap ( me likey this idea )
2> slice it and extend it forward from the tank making it just below the bumper shroud (pan) and make a door to expose it

Joel, you are one clever son of a gun. I like the way that you formed the trunk lip out of notched angle iron.

My vote is for the filler neck to come out in the stock position. BTW water is not a guarantee that you can weld that tank safely. It is a good first step but still use the exhaust trick.

Wish I could help you with a job. I don't know how the economy is treating them but you might stop by at Pastorius Machine, right off the north service road.

ok i made some floor pans but i can not weld them in yet its nice they are almost done i will drill allot of holes around the edge and spot weld them to the angle iron then lay a strip for the vertical front section and shape the side ( little tricky )
its late so il hammer dolly the tins flat tomorow can you believe i cut this all out with my shear man my hands are tired but i had a shit load of fun doing it :) and yes these are recycled shelves if its free its for me

Joel if that gas tank doesn't work out for you, you can use a 66 mustang gas tank, it lays flat in the trunk, all you have to do is make a simple frame for it and it sits right into it.[IMG]

    Hey Joel!

Just a quick note to let you know that I'm still lurking your thread. Your C-dan is coming along great! I'm sure glad that my coupe was pretty much solid...what a lot of work! But it will be worth it. The '46-'48 4-door Plymouth C-dan is perhaps the best looking 4-door ever. Keep up the great work! :)

Good point. Also, a 64 Chevy tank will fit right in on that parcel shelf over the rear axle. Always plenty of options!
