I installed a 350th ****** in my 47 plymouth going to use the stock rearend how do i connect the chevy driveshaft to the stock rearend ?the original bolts on .anyone ever done this?
...you probly won't be happy using the orig. rearend, it's geared too low for much other than round town drivin;...I'd suggest a later rearend install with about 3:00 gear.
I agree. Not just for the gear ratio, but those stock ones have the drums on a tapered shaft that are a super ***** to pull off when it comes time to redo the brakes, and they're weak. You'll be way better off digging up an A body 8 3/4 or I just read about a Jeep Cherokee rear that is supposed to work in those cars as well. Then you'll be able to keep the same bolt pattern and it'll simplify brakes, gear ratio, and be much stronger. A $100 spent here will probably pay for itself vs a custom driveshaft to fit to the OG rearend.
The 48 Plymouth I have still has the original bolt on flanged tronion cross shaft rear joint. To use it with a modern transmission, you would have to have a drive shaft made using one of those ends and whatever you need at your transmission end. I've had some older Plymouths that had a regular u joint on the rear axle, think you would still have to at least have a conversion u joint to use that rear axle. Not really sure when things changed, seems like maybe they used what was available. At any rate, I don't use the factory rear axle from a 40's Plymouth, I upgrade to something newer. There are a lot of modern axles that will fit pretty easily. Gene
What you gonna do for e brakes?? since the E brake was on the back of the Plymouth trans???? You can go to a Jeep cherokee or Mopar B body rear with 3.55 gears fairly easily by moving the spring mounts, then you will have e brakes again aslo. Some one said a Camaro, Nova or malibu rear end can be foud that doesn't need to have the spring perches moved but i can not recall from what model year. But I think it was posted here not to long ago.
4x4 s10 or s15 blazer / jimmy is a near perfect fit. You will still need to change the spring perches though.
