So I have an opportunity to buy a 74 472. I currently have a 68 472 that runs great! I want to make the 74 a torque monster. My Question is what is the better year for the 472 68 or 74? Which one should I build??

Always go for the older one, got a '68 and '74 myself.......newer ones were detuned and have pollution controls.

Most of the pollution control are add on's out side of the long block. Do you know if there are any internal advantages or disadvantages? Thanks

im by no way a caddy man but ive done some readin on them because we have a 72. i seem to rememeber that the older ones used the same block but its all the added goodies that drop the hp in the later yrs.but if your going to rebuild one it shouldnt matter.they are great torque monsters.but damn parts are way on up there.and i thought that bbf were high to rebuild....

I also have a 68. If you are building a high end motor, the heads don't matter as I assume you are changing everything other than the block anyway. As far as I have read, it shouldn't be any different. They usually are all great blocks because of the high nickel content. Have fun

    Up til 73 76CC heads, 74 up 122CC.

68 heads had air injection passages.
