Howdy, I'm looking at purchasing a 48-52 Ford F1 steering gearbox and the seller is saying the splines for the pitman arm are a little damaged but usable. Sounded like he watched a mechanic smack the splined portion with a hammer to get the pitman arm off.......

I'm wondering if there is a general "kit" or method I can go about rebuilding the whole gearbox as well as fixing the splines..??...of if I'd be better off sending it to someone that can rebuild the whole thing.

In case it matters I am wanting to use the gearbox in my 34 coupe project and will be running a 392 hemi - can this gearbox handle the weight of a hemi?

    Thanks, Ben

I would first get pictures of the sector, cause new ones are expensive. Then contact @NealinCA about a rebuild, including a new flange to perfectly fit your 34.

  3. If he smacked it with a hammer it may be the threaded end is damaged. If its mushroomed its done. If a thread is bent you might clean it with a file. The pitman shaft from Ford car boxes from the mid thirties up will fit a F-1 box if you need to replace it.Its a simple box to rebuild if you have shafts that arent pitted badly. If you arent up for removing the flange, and welding a new one then having it done by Neal will make the project way easier.

Randy Gross is the F1 box guru. He modifies them for Model A installation. He uses a 1 piece steering shaft not one that has been welded.

If you can't get any satisfaction from either of those places, talk to Mac VanPelt (@Mac VP) about your tranny. He's been in the business of rebuilding trannys for the last 18 years.

Alan, he's talking about a steering box.

I'd be worried that the threads were mushroomed. Or they were beating on the side of the pitman arm to get it to pop off like a tie rod end or ball joint.
