I decided to build a generator can and stuff the guts from an old GM alternator in it. Can anyone confirm the outer diameter of the can used on 48-53 Flathead Ford Generators (I think it's about 5.2") and the position of the hole for the locating pin. Searched all over and I don't have on original as a template. Much appreciated.
I'd advise not doing that. Most Alternator failure is normally due to overheating. They create enormous heat especially during large demand. The early Ford generator housing will not provide enough ventilation for that purpose. Normally a 12 volt early 60's Ford generator will produce adequate amperage for most hot rod applications. The biggest problem with that application is finding a dependable 12 volt aftermarket voltage regulator.
The internals of a 1964 Ford generator will retrofit your olde generator very nicely.... SINNERS C.C.
Thanks for the feedback. I'm aware of the heat issue and was planning to fin and perforate the can to give the alternator as much air as I can. I was planning to make the can out of Aluminum and press the stator in so if anything it should have more surface area for cooling. Plus I like fins and ribs on my machined parts. Mainly I wanted to make an alternator that used the stock Ford clamping band and mount. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
