Heres the truck I went and looked at, I *think* it's got a 261/powerglide from a later 50's chevy in it. Seemed like it ran pretty good. The flatbed kills me though....Can't make up my mind if I would want to pick it up or not. If I do it'll probaly just to patch her up and move her onto someone else. What do you guys think?

If the price is right, I'd nab it. A bed and rear fenders can't be that hard to find.

is it just 48-54 beds that fit? I know alot of companies like gm used the same beds for many many years, but I can't remember what works and what doesn't.

Thanks, are you going to be on the salt this year with yours?? It would be neat to get a picture of them together.

When I was a teenager (long time ago) I saw
    Ron Dunn's sectioned 50 Ford

in a magazine. It was one of my favorite cars at that time and I always wanted to section something. So when I started on my truck I took some black and white pictures of it and had them blown up to 8 X 10's and put them on a piece of glass with a light underneath (cheap light table) and moved them around for different amounts of chop and section and traced the final decissions onto paper until I had what I liked. Later I realized the "Dream truck" had also been sectioned.

If you go to b'ville this year stop by,

    Sum

BOONES any more pics of the green pantina one that was the fifth picture you posted on this page. it has the red engine compartment and dashboard with the 5 spokes sitting on air bags. i really liked that one when i seen it at the scottsdale goodguys show last year. it had a chysler dash or something like that. and i think a hemi? could be wrong but i do remember it was cool. i only got one picture cause everyone was flocking around it like flys on shit. if the owner of that truck is reading this please post a bunch of pictures also.

The orange one is a 54. It has a 283/th250 and is now in pieces getting a little a love one piece at a time.

The black one is rusting in piece at my dad's place wating on it's turn for love.

I have a 327 and saginaw 4 speed waiting for it. I drove it when I was 16 some 32 years ago.

  12. Sum,
haven't seen you around for sum time, always admired your truck on the old RRT.
when I started on my 54 I had worries about similarities between yours, Russ Meeks, and the dream truck. all prime examples and good drivers.
I just let the parts I had in house determine the build, I have $830 invested including the price of the truck. my target is under 2 grand with paint and interior. I don't think that everyone could build that cheap but I'm somewhat of a packrat and Whoarder. never walk away from a free part and my place looks like it. I had a free COE that I cut up for parts (I just sold the remains to OL SUB for big bucks that I could deduct from the $830) chopped, channeled, sectioned, and stretched. I'm building it for a daily driver work truck. I have to get it down 6-8 inches and still haul loads (that work truck thing) I guess I'm going to clip and Z can't find any alternatives. but I'm sure open to sugestions about what works (remembering my budget)

    (Frame Details)
I like what you are doing. I thought about stretching my cab, but didn't. The extra length will come in handy for you especially if you don't drop the floor. Personally I would drop the floor for sure. If the cab is off and you can get to the frame you can do it in a day easy the way I did it. Then use some 1 X 1 thinwall tubing to make new floor braces and cover them with 16 gauge.

What size wheels/tires are you going to run? What is the suspension front/rear?

For what you want to do (work truck) I would figure a way to get some air bags in the back along with leafs. I'm using air shocks in the back to regulate my height with and without the trailer or other weight, but bags would be better. In fact now (maybe still sometime) I wish I would have put truck arms in the back. They work good in a lot of ways.

If you can do it for under $2000 I admire you. With a new (re-built) motor and the 700R4 and in primer I was about $6000-7000 and I did all the work and I only had $150 in the original truck.

  15. I'm staying with the 55 cad motor with 390 heads and tri power installed 7-1-67 hooked to a truck 4 speed. no air, auto, pb, ps, paid $340 as a driver. was going with utility boxes and a 40 ford tail gate now leaning toward stock 54 bed, have two free ones in stock. seems like these restoration shops automatically go with new repops, cheaper for the customer and easier for the shop and awesum for packrats like me. I got the wheels and tires the same way. brand new 15 inch light truck tires and full caps

That COE is going to become a long wheel base COE Suburban using 1-ton panel parts and Suburban side windows.

I'd post pictures but they are only in my imagination and construction won't start before next week.... er, year... (decade?)

  17. so the trip home went well? I finally mowed the orchard. now if I can get rid of those buses and ten project cars. the place would almost be presentable.
I don't need photos I can see your dreams clearly

If I remember correctly, the Chevy beds are the same from '54-'86. '47-'53 should mount the same (or very close), but have angled top rails instead of flat rails. Chevy Duty, Mac's, or Chevys of the '40s could confirm this.

If I'd known you could see my dreams I might have asked for some drawings while we were there....

Trip home was uneventful, which is always my preference when pulling a loaded trailer.

  24. I just drove the Jimmy a couple hot laps around the pasture (that sumbitch is fast and quick I've always wanted a stick shift caddy) then loaded that Bed that was in front of the 57 GMC motor home (thats still for sale) it fit perfect. I have it parked next to the 54 chev trash hauler. I'm going to take some photos of the pair.

Here is a pic of my 49 project. It has been sectioned 5 inches and is going to get a 3 inch chop. It is sitting on a S10 frame also. A lot of people ask me how the Dream Truck is doing? I tell them just a dream for a now.
It was going to get a 50 Buick front end grafted to it too. Kinda of changed that idea for now.

the roof looks kinda funny with the section and no chop does'nt it. i'm realy starting to like these trucks sectioned though. that thing should be killer with the chop done.
i see you have a pretty large portion of the lower cab missing. i saw on Ebay that they sell entire NEW cab rear sections. also entire NEW roof panels too. one was $250 and the other $300, i forget which cost which. looked like the seller is a supplier and sells them quite often. should'nt be hard to find if you do a search on Ebay. ...just in case you need those parts.

we've got a pretty cool idea for the front of Springer's 50 Chevy truck... if he ever quits workin 2 jobs 6 days a week and spendin all that damn time with his family he might get something done on it :p...

i think i'd be tempted to "Z" the frame front and rear to maximize the interior space... maybe build the center of the frame out of 2x4 tubing even... just a thought. i'm not real familiar with these trucks but i do believe there is alot of room between the stock floor and the bottom of the body. i'd take advantage of that. ofcourse i'm 6'1" and 250 so i need the room :D ...
