I recently took my '50 GMC from the Philly PA area all the way out to the Indy Road Rockets show in Indianapolis Indiana,....and back,....she made it with flying colors and no breakdowns! Over 200K in miles on the engine, running in primer, no s-10 frames or improvements to her running gear except for a change out in rear gears to 3:55 gears,....top speed 65 mph,...it was a 14 hour ride to and from,..well longer back due to rain storms!

    Jason

ps. yeah and my wife came along with me,...to do that long of a ride,..she kicks ass!!

yes, cause all I got was the front half of the GMC frame. I think the rest was turned into a trailer.

Looking for a bed, running boards and rear fenders. I got lucky and found a GMC tailgate.

Good, now you'll have a truck to paint, and you can leave mine the hell alone. LOL I don't remember, are you looking at a 5-window or a 3-window? GMC? Hope someone scores that wagon soon so you can get started.

Hey, I just wanted to make yer roof match yer dash!

The one I'm lookin' at is a 5 window Chevy....with a flatbed. So I'll be looking for a stock bed as soon as I buy it! I hate flatbeds with a passion!

One more question......the truck I'm looking into has that damn flatbed on it, how can I tell if it's supposed to be a long bed or short bed? Did the two versions have a different wheelbase? Need to know what I'm looking for as I search around for a bed.

(Mine original --- Long Wheel Base)

Yes they are different. Mine started as a long bed, but I shortened the wheelbase to 108 inches, which I belive is 8 inches shorter than the short wheel base. So I think the short wheelbase is about 116 inches and I believe the long wheel base was about 10-12 inches longer than that.

You can see that in the original shape had a spare tire mount on the side of the bed behind the cab. I don't think the short wheelbase ones had room for that. Also the front of the beds on the long wheel base had the front upright support at the front of the bed and another one about a foot back. Of course since you don't have a bed you won't be able to see that.

.Your flatbed looks like a 3/4 ton ...the rear springs mount on the sides of the frame on a 3/4 ton and under the frame on a 1/2 ton. Rear axle is below springs on a 3/4 and above on 1/2 ton. 1/2 tons ride better, 3/4 ton springs are thicker/stiffer. On 1/2 tons I remove all leafs except the 5 long ones, ride great and can still haul stuff.
...I'd recommend switching to a 1/2 ton chassis, you can lower it easier and it will ride better. just my 2 cents...good luck.

seems like i ran across a couple (NEW ones) on Ebay last time i was on there. it can't be that hard of a part to get. try a search of some of the better kown parts suppliers for those trucks on the web. Langden's comes to mind. just search for 47-55 Chevy truck parts in your favorite search engine. should'nt take too much searching to find what you need.

Congrats, Hoboy56! My son is fighting going with the S10 frame on his truck right now but he did manage to pick up a 327 this weekend and we'll be digging into his '69 C10 for parts soon! Another '54 Chevy 3100 brought back to life!

    I've titled this "Ambition."

It is my 13 year old son standing next to a truck his grandma drove when I was his age. It took me 15 years to get it back and it has been in his grandpa's barn for almost 10 more. Plan to bring it home soon, maybe this weekend!

1954 Chevy 3100. Got almost all of the parts and another 54 3/4 ton parts truck plus a '69 C10. He's going for a 327 with a TH350 for now!

Hoboy56, thanks for the offer. You guys coming down to the Blissfield show on Sunday? Hippy6 mentioned it earlier this year when I signed on. If so, let me know ahead of time. Maybe I'll have the 48 SD from Vance by then!
