let me prefece this with the ages old slogan that bares repeating for eternety. its your dream - do as you wish. you have a really rare car there and i think you should try to go a bit more traditional with it. i-e no crushed zebra. perhaps you should turn it in to a highlander and plad out the seats with some tuck and roll... a bit custom and wishful thinking the visor is not nearly as cool as a fulton the skirts on that car were custom made and its lowered. also - i do know there is a roof rack (yes, roof rack) available for your car. if you can find one, you could throw some old luggage up on it for a show or something. im pretty obsessed with these cars, although ive never owned one
It is a Fulton visor just in stainless....never got painted...that is truly a beautiful car....this is my first attempt at something out of my 63 Ford POS....I'm 23 and just want to have fun with it...not many people my age running around with a 48 so It really needs to be cool so i can try to get some of my friends in it...now I've really started hanging out with my friends parents...lol
and the luggage rack would be ideal for a really big cooler...lol...i'll have to keep my eyes open for that
that old car needs a plaid interior that looks like the old style seat covers yougot from JC whitney. very cool.
and the vin numbers came out as a highlander club coupe...but the original interior wasn't in it...so i guess that would be pretty original too...lol...does anyone know where i could get traditional highlander plaid??
Try the Imperial club web site couple folks have restored the Town and Country woodies, they have the interior, so some bodies got a line of the fabric. Replacement Highlander mohair was $350 a square yard back in 1970 or so from the site the pics are on. here are a couple shots of a representative sample
The only thing I don't care for is the Fluidrive, Very ****ty on hills but it is great for cruising, after we got ours I found out that my grandparents had a '48 sedan like ours back when they got married 50+ years ago. Grama even remembered how the fluiddrive worked. I'm looking for a visor also, have not found one yet. This will be our first whole summer to cruise, we're gonna drive the wheels off and then park it and go to work, Probably lower, interior, and re built I-6 unless I can find a I-8, replace the fluiddrive with a proper ******. P.S. I've had mine up to 90+ and it was Awesome. They say its a limo, but i'm not sure, its' got the little jumpseats in the back as well as the couch like back seat Oh yea drive that som-*****, it deserves to be enjoyed after 30 years inside, Lower it this fall while you do the interior. Jeff
You said you weren't sure if it's a highlander, so just so ya know... it is. Only highlanders had the flannel pajama-pants interior, which i personally think is fresh as hell in an oddball sorta way, and it's a fairly rare option if i'm not mistaken. (*Edit: just saw that you already know that) If you can find the right material, i would keep the interior as stock as possible. it already looks pretty unique! I've grown to love these cars, and i hope that my old man will sell me his at some point when he realizes he wont get to it. her's a pic of his (it's a 42) Good luck with yours!
Nice car! Leave the 8, leave the fluid drive. Does it have the 4sp, semi automatic they called Vac-U-Matic? You'll find that despite the fluid coupling, it's OK if you do a 1,3,4 shift. (I used to have a '41 Windsor sedan). If you can do your own upholstery, then by all means do it as a Highlander, it'll knock peoples socks off. We did a plaid interior in our '51 wagon, inspired by the Highlander Chryslers, using Olefin fabric rather than broadcloth. Looks great, breathes, easy to clean (we have a dog who thinks she gets shotgun!) after hauling firewood... Put it two inch blocks in back, cut a coil off the front, and be happy. I'll bet it drives great, yes?
Drop it, buff the paint, deep offset 18" Dayton wires 8" on front 10"ers out back, minimal rubber rake (big and little 40 series)......Maroon and gold floral brocade (Grandma's living room couch) upholstery..... Don't be scared.
