anyone on here ever removed the rear springs from an f-1? it looks to me like to get the shackle pins out the spring hanger will have to be removed from the frame or holes drilled in the frame in line with the pins. the hangers are riveted to the frame. i could grind down the rivet heads and reinstall with grade 8 bolts, but would rather not if i don't have to. surely someone has a secret that can help me do this easier. please? this ain't gonna be pleasant if the rivets have to come out. oh, yeah, i'm going to ***ume that the the pins are shot. i bet they are worn in the middle where the bushings are probably wore completely through. i'm ***uming this because i dis***embled one of the springs i'm going to use to replace the broken springs that are in clarence now. all these pins were worn in the middle and there's play in clarence's existing springs so it's a pretty sure thing that they're worn, too. anyone know the best place to acquire pins and bushings? drake? carpenter? mack? other? i've never replaced pins/bushings before. it looks pretty straightforward to me. any surprises i should expect? grease stuff up and tap in with a hammer? i imagine i should clean up the holes in the hangers with emery cloth or something, too?
I'm glad to hear someone else has off-set holes on those rear shackles. Thot I was the only one....... I made an off-set punch out of a piece of 3/8" drill rod. It was a ******, but finally managed to drive 'em out. Set it on jackstands so you can wobble the spring enough to line up those worn out pins. Use lots of PBlaster. Replacing the pins/bushing is pretty straight forward. Take it easy on the knuckles..... Oh, I got my replacement parts at SacVintage. Tim
You might want to try JobLot Autmotive for the parts you are looking for. They have been around for years and specialize in old ford replacement parts. Here is the link. http://www.joblotauto.com/
Just did one but I forced grease (novel idea) into a good zerk fitting and then tapped them out with an offset piece I made and then pulled with the grip pliers.
Mine were a total ***** to get out even with the hagers off the frame. If I remember I burned out the rivits with the plasma. My hangers are all flipped upside down and held with grade eieght bolts (So the back can go even lower)
I got mine out rather easily by enlarging the hole in the frame and the using a punch to drive them out. I used a stepped drill bit and it worked like a charm.
I had to drill mine. Most of them after I went in an eighth of an inch or so I could punch them out. Almost as much fun as removing hinge pins
My pins were worn down to where the dip created by wear makes a ridge that took lots of penetrant and banging to get them by... then the little air hammer. himmelberg
