Okay...so got me a new hood release cable from Dennis Carpenter...minus the handle..i like mine, it's original to the car (48 Ford Super Deluxe Coupe) and it has the same "age" as all the other knobs/dials...how in the heck do you remove it from the old to install it on the new? I don't wanna bust it...gimme the secret please!!
I have removed old plastic knobs from my 41 Ford, (now long gone) and my 48 sedan. This is how you do it. Put the old hood release cable in a vice, and clamp it down about 4-6 inches in back of the knob you want to save. Begin to heat the cable about 2 inches in back of the knob, taking care to get the cable hot, but do not direct heat or flame on the knob. You can even shield the knob with tin foil to keep the flame off it. Heat the cable for a minute, and begin pulling and twisting on the knob. You'll be surprised how fast the knob will come off. Use caution not to overheat, and melt the knob. After the knob is off clean up the hole in the knob with an appropriate size drill, then use JB Weld to glue the old knob on to your new cable, or light switch. Simple, but take your time and don't direct the flame on the knob... Let us know how you did.
I changed all the knobs/dials from the brown deluxe to the silver Super Deluxe to match the grey super deluxe interior that we had put in our '46, got 'em all changed except the hood release. Like you, I don't want to break either one, maybe somebody out there can help us!!
That's EXACTLY what I did when I replaced the fun filled headlight switch...until now, I didn't want to admit it! I guess now it's time for some heat!!
