I've watched this thread from the beginning and find your work an inspiration to all. Keep up the good work........ Jack
Oooooo....I like the way you ran your throttle pedal through the firewall like that...very clever!!! I have the same throttle pedal setup (with the neoprene pivot block) on mine too, and I've never liked the way that it looks with the block on my floor like that. It looks cheap & unfinished (my cable goes through the firewall, and everything else is mounted inside on the floor). I think there may be some modifications in my future. Thanx for a new idea!!
I bought a simple cable operated shifter from B&M. I didnt think about the fact that the cab is channeled 6", that there is not much room between the trans tunnel and the transmission. I clearanced the shifter bracket a little bit, which helped. I also ended up building a raised mount for the shifter assembly.I was hoping it would look a little like a factory bump for a 4-speed. With the mount made, I installed the shifter, and the boot to see how its going to look.Had to add the shifter know to get the full effect. Its not exactly what I had in mind, but should work out just fine, especially when the carpet and interior are installed.
When I got this truck,it did not come with the vent window assemblies.I am going to run 1 piece windows,so I needed to make front run channels.Instead of starting from scratch,I found an extra vent window assembly from my '70 pick up. I just removed eveything that I didn't need. I needed two 18" run channels, whiched worked out nicely because the channel was 36" long,so I just cut it in half. The part that gave me the most trouble was the mount.I needed it to be adjustable.....in 2 directions.I did not want a slot where it mounts to the door,so I had to make the mount adjust inside the door.I tried to keep it simple,I came up with a 3 piece design that gives me in and out adjustment with 1 bolt, front and back adjustment with the other bolt, and only a single bolt hole to mount it to the door. I know its not the best looking, but it seems to work pretty well.
I got my wiring harness the other day,I noticed that all the wires exit the fuse box at the bottom. For the most part this is fine, but I need the dash and column wires to go up.I made a simple "L" shaped mount to start with.(The back part of the fuse box is shown in the pictures) Im mounting it in the drivers side kick panel area. Before I put the mount in,I drilled a hole thru the toe board under the mount area so the harness can pass down thru it and out into the engine bay,and back to the rear of the truck. With the bracket welded in,the column and dash wiring will pass behind the fuse box,and pass thru the bracket and up to the dash. This will keep it tucked back an out of the way,but still let me get to the fuses when I would need to.
Great work dude!!! I'm subscribing to this thread to keep up with it!! Are you any closer to driving it yet?
Im running a vega box.But before I can mount it to the frame,I need to adress a couple of things. The frame has a lot of extra holes that need to be filled. The lower frame edge is wider than the upper edge, and the frame needs to be boxed for the mount. I welded up alls the holes, trimmed the lower edge of the frame to match the upper and cut some steel plate to box in the frame.I will have to finish boxing in the rest of the frame when the motor is out,and I have easier access. I located the box on the rail and drilled the holes.I welded tubes in the holes for the bolts to pass through.I ground the welds on the out side of the frame but left the tubes long on the inside.they will act as spacers so the box will tighten down evenly. The box sits pretty good,(in my opinion). There is a relativly straight line to the steering column and I dont see any binding in the u-joints. Im running headers from a '67 corvette,I figured I mnight have a clearance issue.....which I did.The only real issue is that the steering shaft runs right through the middle mof the front header tube.So I cut out the offending section and tried to figure out a solution..... I grabbed an extra header tube left over from another project and started laying out a way around the shaft.I think a came up with a plan that will work. Its taped together to check fit and the clearance.I can still get to the plugs, header bolts and can remove the shaft. So I will clean evey thing up and get it prpped for welding.
did you have any problems with that shifter? i just installed that same one in my car and no matter how much i would adjust it it would not go into park. i ended up putting the pin in the center hole and it works better now but is still really stiff. i have a th350 trans
Havent tried it yet.Only have it mounted in the truck but not hooked to the trans yet. Thanks for the heads up,I will have to keep that in mind when I get that far.
Got the header welded up and ground the welds.Think it turned out all right..... Welded up the passenger side rail, trimmed it as needed and boxed it up.....
One area that has been giving me trouble is the grill insert.I have already made 2 attempts at it and decided to try a 3rd. I used 1/2" flat stock to make a outer "ring" for the insert.I welded bolts to the inside of the grill shell to mount it to. The top of the insert will need to be tipped back for the hood to clear when it opens.I added 3/4" flat stock to make the vertical bars. I added more bars until the center was filled in. I switched to 1/2" flat stock, and finished filling in the opening. Its hard to see in some of the pictures, but the grill is peaked in the middle to match the hood profile. You can kind of see it in the second picture below. I also added a single horizontal bar in the middle to tie all the vertical together.
hello, You are One talented, Stick with-it Guy. WOW ! ( all of this from June of last year...) double WoW ! -41-
Using '37 ford tail lights. Used some flat stock to make the base of the mount. Used 1/2" square tube to make the stand offs.Angled and capped off one end. Drilled a hole in the top side for the wiring to pass through. Welded the stand off to the base. Took some measurements and welded the mounts to the truck. Then added the lights.....
The bed was missing the cage nuts for the tail gate when I got it. I made a new piece and added some weld nuts to it. Made some room in the stake pocket for the new piece. Welded it in,and dressed the welds. Sprayed on some etch, and installed the hinges and gate. Never liked the idea of gate chains hanging, and banging on the out side of the bed. They would also hit my tail lights,so I used some round tube and solid rod to make some simple latches. And installed on the bed.
Started cleaning the inside of the bed.Gonna replace the front bed panel.so did not clean it. Cleaned up...... Sprayed on some rattle can etch.Didn't spray the floor cause I still workin' on it. Started back on the storage compartment doors.Drilled holes, and made recess's for the lock cylinders. All the doors will have locks.
Needed to be able to fill the tank from inside the bed.Got a simple filler neck and cap, cut a hole for it in the tank and welded it in. Had a couple of guys from the shop stop over at lunch one day and help me take the bed off. We stood it up on the front bed panel so I could work on the underside.
Cleaned up all the metal and rough edges, sealed up the joints and seams, and painted everything. Having built the bed on the truck,I had rough trimmed the frame,at least what I could with the bed on, so it was time to clean up the frame, With it all cleaned up,put some paint on it.
Pulled the gas tank out, needed to fill some of the unneeded holes, trimmed the tubes flush to the tank, made and installed a patch, and sealed it all up. Put some paint on it too.
Finished painting the rear end, cleaned and painted the frame under the cab,and the under side of the floor, still need to do some touch up work, reinstalled the gas tank. Also made a cart to hold the bed while I do the body work to it.
Got a little slow at work,so I took my gauge pods in to keep my self entertained.Stripped off the old paint and clean them up. Going to use the factory speedo,so it got cleaned up also. Using aftermarket gauges in the other 4 pods.Had to make some simple brackets to hold them it the pods using the factory mount holes. And that brings this thread just about up to date for now........
Picked up a new front bed panel in Indy last weekend. So I cut out the old beat up one. Fit up the new one and welded it in. Spent a few hours over a couple of evenings stripping the old paint/rust and crud from the inside of the cab.Sealed up all the joints and seams. When it dried I put on some paint to seal it all up. While I was cleaning,I stripped the remaining paint off the dash board. I had installed the heater unit a while back. Finally got to install the defroster ducts.Had to modify the passenger side duct to get it to work like I wanted it to. Cut some slots at the base of the windshield for them. Filled a few extra holes in the doors/jambs/Cleaned up the rocker area also.
cool truck and a nice job! What gas tank did you start with? looks like it fit within the original? crossmembers.
