49-51 Lincoln rear end

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by rustystuff44, Sep 19, 2010.

  1. Juat wondering how beefy are 1949-1951 Lincoln rear ends.
Are they the same rear end in a Mercury, same years.
And did they use that version in 1952 Lincoln, 53 and 54 models.

Can you explain what you mean by beefy and are you going to use something other than stock engine ? Most any rear will hold up until you put wide tires on the rear and a lot of torque from a bigger engine than what came with the car .
Need more details on your plans .

Oddrod46 has the model (Dana 44) but they are not quite the same as a Mercury of the same years. 1949 Merc had the Dana 41 the the 50-51 had Dana 44 but were slightly more narrow in the case and axles than the Lincoln. Spring mounts were different too. Lincoln had different gear ratios for the ring & pinion. If they used them in Jeeps then they were beefy enough for rough service with a medium torque motor but it's not a Ford 9 inch.

According to my shop manual the '49--'51 Lincoln and Mercury had the same design (Dana ??) with 9.25" ring gears. The Lincoln had 1.23" diameter axles and the Merc had 1.18" diameter.
