I found out where one is today, haven't went and looked at it yet. Supposedly the sheetmetal is still in pretty good shape, the kept talking about how nasty the interior was over an dover so I dunno if that means the floor is gonna be fucked or not. Anyways, I tried looking up some of these online, and there weren't any on ebay, and only like 5 on the collector car trader website. How many different models were they in these years? I tried looking up produsiton specs but couldn't find any of those either. I thought they might be at least semi-rare cars since there were so few online. These are the only car from that time period that I would rather get ahold of than a merc to cut up. I think I remember seeing one hamber on here with one, anyone have pics or any of the info I was looking for? I'm asking alot of shit lately, but I have to take advantage of the Tech week.
Lido? the hell is a lido? I'm not sure since I haven't gone to check it out. The guy said the model but I can't remember it, I was hoping someone would say somethign to jog my memory. He kept talking about the 4-door merc he had as his first car, so that kinda clogged my head up.
If memory serves me right, I think that the mercs and lincs are the same car underneath. That means you could do the ol' caprice frame/motor/tranny/floorboard swap pretty easy!
The Lido coupe version had a higher level of interior trim and a vinyl roof as standard equipment. The reason I say that if it is 2 door that it's a Lido is becuase most of the 2 doors they made came out in Lido trim (maybe becuase they looked sportier, who knows). Thats not to say that they did'nt have 2 door cosmos, it's just a greater likelyhood that it's aLido if ti's a 2 door.
The Mercs and Lincoln were the same from the firewall back bodywise. Merc frames are 118" wheelbase and Lincolns are 122". They were 4" longer in the front for the Lincoln flathead 8 engine. And the Lido were only '50-51 models.
The Lincoln has a longer wheelbase. The baby Lincolns(the ones that look like mercs) is 6-8? inches longer in the nose only. From the firewall back, pretty much the same as a Merc. The Cosmos are a totally different body(one piece curved windshield). I put Lido trim on our Merc. Lido is Lincolns "Monteray". Vinyl top and different side trim and leather upols............OLDBEET
I didn't see that pic when I posted, but thats exactly like the one I parted to get that side trim. They had three different side trims in 1951, the one I just put glass in is like the pic, except it has a straight bold pot metal side trim. Also one model with Merc trim. I have a nose like the one in the pic if anyone wants it......OLDBEET
well if they only did the lidos in 50-51, then this one is probaly not it since the guy said it was a 49. But then again people around here don't know wwhat the hell they're talking about most of the time. I don't really dig the covered roof anyways. Any pics of these things cut up?
I've got a 49 Cosmo, so this post is up my alley! 49 - 51 had two basic platforms, same drivetrain: (Baby) Lincoln, which was a Mercury body from the firewall back. It had the same front clip as the larger model. These cars had spilt windshields, and pop out vent windows on the coupe. Also had different dash and crank windows. The Cosmopolitan had its own, larger body and a one piece windshield. It had power window front and rear- even on the coupe! Both models were available in coupe, sedan (with suicide doors) , and convertible. There was also a town sedan/ 4 door fast back early on in 49, but it was discontinued...
That car is Bitchin', I'm thinking the guy said it was a more door (which doesn't bother me with suicide doors), If i decide I want it, I hope it's the one with the spil windsheild, cos the one piece deal would make me havin gsecond thoughts about taking the saw to it. I thought for sure someone on here had one of these with a fair amoutn of chop, but maybe I'm having a brain fart and it was yours that i remember. These cars are the ones with the super expensive to rebuild and hard to find parts for motors right?
Swichblade- I ran the 337 Flattie with an OD trans in it for many years- When it finally croaked, I couldn't afford to rebuild it, and Edelbrock heads and intakes are REALLY hard to find for this thing. I slipped in a 351 Cleve and its still going strong... Kinda miss the way that flattie sounded, though. Thanks for the kind words about the car, I've had it almost 10 years now, and its been a slow build up from rust bucket to where it is now...
