I think 49-50 looks like a 49-50 Merc, but 51 I believe kinda like a squared off 54 Pontiac.......OLDBEET
Here is stock 49 Meteor grilles with the center bar. The Meteor grilles are shorter than the Merc ones and use a Merc center bar. The surround was chromed or stainless. This is my old 49 2-door.
Here is a pic of my 49 Meteor again only this time the stock park lites are there and the grille is 49-50 Merc bolted together in the center without the center bar.
Here is my son's 51 ford coupe with 50 Meteor nose. The 50 had a painted grille surround. We used a Merc grille bolted together in the center.
Oldbeet, the car beside the 51 is a 49. The grille in the 51 coupe looks out of shape due to the picture resizing to put it on here. When using a 49-50 surround you need to use a 49-50 Meteor or ford hood. The Meteor hood was just a ford one that the factory filled the cutout in the middle. The 51 ford hood will not work on a 49-50 Meteor grille opening as 51 hood is straight across the opening and a 49-50 hood dips down on the ends. If you use a Merc or Meteor grille in a 49-50 Meteor opening you will need the splash pan as well as there is a dip in it for the grille to fit. The 49-50 ford splash would have to be modified. Any other questions? Nutz, because I am.
In 1956 my brother had a 49 Ford with a 51 Meteor grill in it. Was a mild custom with a "new" Olds motor. I busted the trans first time I drove it. Stock trans. We used to beat them "new" Chev V8 cars, pretty fast for the day.....OLDBEET
Danny, yours is a Merc. The Meteors were shoebox fords with a grille surround like a merc only it bolts in 49-51 fords. Really hard to find today and only made in Canada.Nutz
Thanks guys, got an email request this weekend that wanted to know what they looked like and I had no pictures of the 49/50 and knew that the Hamb would/could come through.
