I get front end shake that comes on abruptly above about 60 mph in my T-bucket. Wheels/tires are balanced, off the car. All front end components are new. Spindles no slop at the axle, 1/8" toe-in, caster 6 degrees. I have 49-54 Chev spindles. Is there a trick to adjusting the front wheel bearings? I am also going to re-check the alignment. I was also told to get the wheels balanced ON the car but haven't tried to find a place that will do that. Is balancing on the car common?
what kind of bearings does it have? ball bearings usually get adjusted kind of tight, tapered rollers kind of loose. how's the toe in? what kind of tires does it have?
on car balancing is old tech. ask them if they use a hunter balancer. if they say no, keep driving to the next place. hunter makes one that not only checks balance, but side thrust, and tells the tech where to rotate the tire to minimize pull, vibration, etc. Its a new, but very trick piece. as for the bearings, the factory ball bearings are probably a little worn, I think there are replacement tapered roller bearings from a late 50s truck that will go right in place, but don't hold me to it.
The hub is mid-'70s chev intermediate (ECI adapters disk adapters) Front tires are I believe VW size 6.50/15 maybe, radial. Toe-in 1/8" at least when I last checked 500 miles ago. Caster 6 degrees.
