does any one know how to remove the back support from the seat bottom on a 51 chevy front bench seat (***ume 49-54 are the same). I have looked and do not see any bolts (do you have to remove the panel on the back of the upper seat (that goes down along the side of the bottom. (I have the front lower side pieces off but I am now stuck..

I need to get it appart so I can take the seat cover off and install a new pad.

    thanks

On the underside of the seat bottom, in the middle, you will find a pin connecting the two backrests to the seat bottom. Pull the pin out. Grab the backrest from the center and tilt the backrest away beginning from the middle. The backrest outer sides have an arm with a hole that pivots on another pin on the outside of the seat bottom, and it might or might not have a C clip on it.

Remove the bottom cushion. From there there are two bolts on each side of the back rest. Remove these. Then pull UP and out.

WCRiot, I am referring to the front seat (seperating the two back pieces from the lower section)

happyhoppy, I ***ume it is easiest to pull the seat out and turn it upside down to gain access to the pins? still not sure I understand the step

"Grab the backrest from the center and tilt the backrest away beginning from the middle"

is this standing behind it (and tilting it forward)

Sorry Boones, I went to public school.

Yes, take the seat out first.
Each backrest pivots on 2 pins, one pin L&R and they share the center pin underneath.
The far Left or Right pin is behind the backrest lower side cover.
The L&R pin sometimes have a C clip on it, sometimes not. My experience has been 50/50 clip and no clip.
Remove the bottom center pin first. Then grab the right ( or left ) backrest at the split ( center ) lift up and out toward the opposite end.

I own a 1950 and a 1954 chevy both 2 door, the front seats are different.

    clear as mud?
