49-54 chevy st. 6 MPG?

I know it's random but it got brought up last night. What kind of MPG does a relatively stock one get?

Not that hot. About 18 MPG if it is in good shape, and tuned up. A 283 will do as well or better. The six will run on lower octane gas but that doesn't make any difference when you can't buy it.

 

It will vary greatly depending on how the car is geared and what intake is on it, but I've seen guys claim anywhere from 18-20 to high 20s. I wouldn't be surprised if you could do 25 mpg average highway in a light car with an overdrive trans and anything but the stock Rochester B for a carb. Just changing to a Carter YF will improve milage a little.

 

I know guys with a T5, behind the stock engine, getting 25-26, with carefully selected tires and rear end ratio. For sure, one has a Carter.

 

I got about 19mpg to and from Canada several years back.. Stock powerglide car.

 

I got a 3 speed and hope to keep it. I've heard a variety of answers of what ratio is in the rear so I have no idea what I have there.

3.55 gears from a P-glide car will help. My '52 235 standard gets about 20 Canadian.

 

Bone stock my high school 54 got about 19 on the road going 65 because it has 3.78 gears with a 3 speed. Thats was in 1960-62

I had a 58 Delray with a 235 and a stick. It was a really neat car, it did about 20 MPG but nobody cared then, gas was 29 cents a gallon. Today if I owned that car, it would have a five speed, a tach, and a vacuum gauge.

 

54 210. 235 Howard M-4, Hei, Dual Roch B's, Dual Ex. synthetic oil. 4 Speed Sag and a 2.73 rear. Radial tires. It will average 25 MPG on the interstates. And that's going across PA on 80 where it's uphill both ways across the state. Going south and North on 95 it does the same and that's a flat run both ways.

 

He should, wasted fuel has not been turned into power. I thought we were into high-performance, not high-waste. Maximum performance requires minimizing waste. Not too sure why you guys celebrate inefficiency.

Besides, if he is getting 6, then something is VERY wrong.

 

my 55 chev is a 235 six with pg 3.55 rear end i get 18mpg. there is something very wrong if your only getting 6mpg
